Greetings KRew

The first week of winter is upon us and if you are anything like me, you have already started layering up before heading out for a run. I’ve been wearing two shirts when running for about a month and have now added a pair of running gloves that a friend recently gave me. But no matter how cold it gets here in Sydney, nothing will stop us from heading out and pounding the pavements to get that running fix for the day. (Apologies to people reading this who live where it snows over winter and think we in Sydney don’t actually know what real cold is….)

One of the advantage of the cooler months ahead is that there is plenty of racing coming up for us to enjoy, from the regular 5km events each week at parkrun, 10km runs like the Sydney Striders event this Saturday, to half marathons, marathons and for the super keen ultra-marathons. These events take place in a variety of places, not only in different cities, in other towns and in the country, on sealed roads, fire trails and narrow twisty single tracks, mountains and beaches, there really is something for everyone. So hit your local web browser, talk to your running buddies, read running magazines or whatever way you find out about the many awesome races that we are fortunate enough to have access to here in Australia.

Tonight though is KRClassic, and as usual Joy and I will be there from about 6:15pm or so to welcome you and while some folks are still running out a bit earlier in smaller groups, as restrictions have really eased we are heading back to having the whole group start at 6:40pm. But, no matter whether you want to start a bit earlier, or at the more traditional time of 6:40pm, Joy will be there with her car to store your bags should you need it. Can I ask though, that you please have your bags stored by 6:40pm so that we can all head out for a run across the bridge together?

And can I also ask that you please register your attendance at this link:

https://kirribillirunners.org/covid/

Or I will have a QR code tonight for you to register as you arrive.

Post the run we have been heading to the Kirribilli Hotel and then on to pizza to socialise and I hope that you to will stay and join us, of course observing the current COVID restrictions in those places. Last week we were even back in the spiritual home of KR in the downstairs of the KH!

This week for the runners profile I’ve been talking to one of our newer runners, who is a regular at KR and at the speed sessions on a Tuesday evening, who has taken to running like a duck to water, and is preparing for her first marathon, Rosie.

Your name and/or running nickname?

None, really I’m just Rosie, too boring.

How long have you been running?

Seriously I have only been running since COVID restrictions last year.

What inspires you to keep running?

I really like a routine and setting goals, so doing my marathon plan in preparation for a sub-4hr Gold Coast marathon is great for both.

What’s the coolest place you have ever run?

Coolest place I’ve ever run – well since overseas vacations seem like a distant memory, I’ll go with the coast of Gerroa in the Gerringong area

How do you feel at the start of a run?

Usually a bit stiff and slow, but by the 2km mark it’s going better and I get stronger from there.

When you see another runner coming towards you, what do you do?

I try to smile, unless I’m going up a steep hill or at the end of a long run, then I’m too busy praying for the end!

What’s the most interesting thing that has ever happened to you whilst running?

It’s Not very interesting but super wholesome, running past the dog park the other day, this massive dog was playing with the local birds.

What do your friends think of your running?

They are a bit bemused really, particularly those friends who play sport and would rather chase a ball than run down a road.

What do you do with your clothes immediately after you get home from a run?

After a run I stretch for 10min, then throw my clothes in the wash basket.

What’s the one thing you wish you’d been told before you started running?

That you will plateau, sometimes for quite a while, and that’s perfectly normal and ok!

Thanks for sharing Rosie, and all the best for your debut marathon on the Gold Coast, it will be an awesome experience and I look forward to hearing about how it goes.

How Symmetry Can Make You a Better Runner

Either, because running style, injury or just because; runners develop muscle asymmetry. It’s particularly apparent when you have a chronic niggle that either progressively gets worst or causes other niggles to develop from over compensating that can stop you running all together.

Having recently experienced this myself, it got me thinking how important it is to have symmetry in your running style. How do you zero in on trouble spots? How do you go about fixing the problem?

So I did some research and found this great article on this very topic. So regardless if you are an ultra-marathoner or a casual KR Classic runner, this article has some helpful information for you.

Thanks Chris always good to read about ways to prevent injuries occurring and how to improve running style.

Well that’s a wrap for another week.

Remember to take care of yourself and others.

Happy trails,

Steve
