Greetings KRew

Winter 2026 has started and we are now halfway through the annual orgy of light and sound that is Vivid. It, of course, means that we are running the Vivid Variation course for the second week.

As I wrote about last week, we ask that if you are running with KR tonight that you do this alternate course and do not attempt to do the standard KRClassic Course.

Vivid was very busy when I was there on Monday night and I’m sure, that with the current great Winter weather it will be even busier around the Opera House than usual.

Tonight’s run will be the second of the KRClassic Vivid Variation Runs. Below is map of the run and I’ve included the link to the GPX file on our FB page. The course is quite easy follow and a bit of fun as a variation.

This week a long-time running friend of mine Karin Thorburn, was interviewed by the ABC after she had recently completed 551 official marathons that is the most of any Australian, she was also named the Senior Sportsperson of the Year at this year’s Australia Day awards. Karin’s journey has not been easy, at the age of 12 she was diagnosed with scoliosis and had a steel rod surgically fused to her spine and was told she would never play sport. Her story is very inspirational and proof that no matter what we are confronted with, we can overcome. Well done Karin on this awesome achievement.

20th Anniversary Update

Luzaan and I have managed to get together and discussed the upcoming 20th Anniversary events. I’m pleased to announce that we have confirmed the KR Metro Shuffle for 2026 starting at 11am on 13th June. See FB invite for details.

This was a very popular social event last year as we used the Metro from Sydenham to Chatswood stopping at each station for a drink at a local establishment. This year we will start at the General Gordon opposite Sydenham Station. We have lined us different pubs this year so join for the whole event, or just part of it up to you. But come along!

Stay tuned for the Al-mazing Race announcement!

The calendar of course, has all the regular KR runs as well as the major races that we will be following and promoting. We will add to the races as the year goes on. If you have a favourite race, then let me know and we can add it.

Upcoming Events

Monthly Long Run Sunday. After last week’s very successful long run, we will be doing it again on Sunday 21st June. Save the date!

Tuesday Speed Sessions. We will be meeting at 6:30pm at the usual spot at Gore Hill Oval. It is open to all and if you want to know more details, please reach out to me.

Upcoming Races

This weekend there is the Wollongong Running Festival that I know a bunch of KR are heading down for. It is currently 85% full so spots still available. See Tully who is the local ambassador for the festival, and he can share a discount code that makes it’s a cheap local race

Check out the new Paramatta Half held in June which should be a good race to head out west for. They’ve just released the new course. Now sold out!

Another great local 10k race is the Real Insurance harbour 10k a flat fast course along the foreshore. So far we have 26 people in the KR team and would love to have you join us.

Next Sri Chinmoy race will be on this Sunday the 7th June at Iron Cove for a 7k and 21k event. These races are a friendly, low pressure local race series that is very reasonably priced, have various distances on offer and held in some of the most scenic parts of Sydney. https://au.srichinmoyraces.org/sydneyraces

Of course, there are many races throughout the year that the KR will do, such as those out at Sydney Olympic Park and around the foreshore. We will highlight as many we think of, but if you have one to promote you think the KRew will love, let us know!

If you want to find some races for yourself, I highly recommend using The Running Calendar website which lists just about every race in Australia. If you find a race that has a KR Team and needs a code let me know. Or if you are the first KR to sign up for a race, please create a KR team and let me know.

If you are bringing bags tonight, Evelyn will have her car there to hold them for you. As always please collect them straight after the finish photo. Thank you Evelyn, much appreciated.

Regarding the bag drop, to help keep KR running smoothly I have asked Trevor to take on being the coordinator for Monday and Thursday nights to ensure there is a car to enable the bag drop. He has a group chat and would love to add you to it if you are able to help from time to time.

That’s a wrap for this week; remember to take care of yourself, and if you can, others.

Keep running @everyone and happy 20th Anniversary Kirribilli Runners!
