Greetings KRew

I’m sure you all know that quote from an famous Irish verse, although right now I’m hearing everyone complaining that Cahill on the way back does nothing but rise to meet your feet.

You would have all seen Judy’s invite on out FB page for an Irish themed dress up run tonight, and just like in fair green hills of Ireland it’ll probably be a wet run tonight which will be lovely and refreshing. Talking of refreshing hopefully we can go to the pub post the run, check in and share a Guinness or two before heading to pizza.

As you may recall in the newsletter last week I talked about 6 Foot Track Mountain Marathon that was held last Saturday and that a bunch of us KRs were going to race it. Well I’m pleased to report that not only did we run it, many got PB’s and some made it back in spectacular fashion with Damon having a huge stack with less than a kilometre to go on the most dangerous part of the course. Fortunately, he was okay and got up and still got himself a PB. Personally I had a great run and was faster than I’ve been in a few years and very happy to finish my 11th time racing that course. Enrique did his 6th and got awarded the buckle. Great to see Jie and Jon doing their first ones and both having a great time on the track. And a big shout out to the Volunteers, with KR being represented by Eddie and Dan leahy, well-done guys awesome job! (Sorry if I missed anyone.)

Next big race that will have a lot of KR running will be the Australian Running Festival in Canberra in a few weeks time. If you have not signed up yet, make sure you do and come to join us in one of the many events that they have on that weekend.

This weekend we are having the annual Bridge to Balmoral run roughly 12km of fun and photo opportunities along the harbour foreshore. We kick off from the steps at the bridge at 8:30am come rain or shine and finish with some brunch in Balmoral. See you there then! (For more details please the invite on our FB page.)

And on the 27th March KR 2020 Club Person of the Year Matt will be running his 100th parkrun so come along to join him in that one!

More immediately though is the KRClassic tonight, as usual Joy and I will get there about 6pm to welcome you and we are still running out in smaller groups so as to spread the Red (and this week The Green) Shirts out on the bridge. But no matter whether you want to start a bit earlier, or at the more traditional time of 6:40pm, I will be there to see you, and Joy will be there with her car to store your bags should you need it. Can I ask that you please have your bags stored by 6:40pm so that we can all head out for a run across the bridge?

And can I also ask that you please register your attendance at this link:

https://kirribillirunners.org/covid/

Or I will have a QR code tonight for you to register as you arrive.

Last week as you will recall I was speaking to Lyndal on her insights on running and this week I’ve been talking to her husband Bill, also one of the very regular runners about his running journey so far.

Your name and/or running nickname?

Billy Boy

How long have you been running?

About 8 years - previously would only run I would do is to the bar for last orders.

What inspires you to keep running?

The challenge of it, and the endorphin rush and of course, being able to “casually” run a marathon is cool.

What’s the coolest place you have ever run?

The Great Ocean Walk in Victoria.

How do you feel at the start of a run?

Impatient - Lets get on with it!

When you see another runner coming towards you, what do you do?

Wave, smile, and make sure my form is good.

What’s the most interesting thing that has ever happened to you whilst running?

I’m a dog rescuer… “Honey” was my favourite dog, she was a good few kms away from her humans, and she was very well behaved while we ran together to re-unite her with them. Also I once had to balance my way across a partially built bridge in a training run - 55kms into the run, it was touch and go if my legs had enough coordination to make it.

What do your friends think of your running?

Most people don’t get it. When training for ultra’s I normally get either “How far is the marathon you’re running?” - or “I get tired driving that far”. So I don’t spend much time talking about it outside of running friends.

What do you do with your clothes immediately after getting home from a run?

Eventually take them off and throw them on the floor of the laundry.

What’s the one thing you wish you’d been told before you started running?

“Start slow, get slower”

Thanks Bill that’s awesome and good luck in your next big race! Next week in my series I’m talking to Josh followed by his wife Vanessa.

What Runners Should Know About the COVID-19 Vaccines

For the past year we have been living with COVID19 and as runners we have all shared stories with each other on many runs about how we have been personally affected by it and the restrictions it caused. In deed it has become a daily ritual to scan the news for what is happening both here and overseas.

In Australia we have been more fortunate than most in tackling COVID, and with the vaccine just beginning to role out, running has returned to a new stable normal, and chat has turned to be about the vaccine and its’ affects on running. This got me thinking as to what does it mean to me as a runner? When I get the jab, what if anything should I do differently? Can I still go for a run?

Well thanks to Steve who shared the following article with me, I have the answers to some of those questions. Although the article is targeted towards US the advice given about running post vaccination are sound and compatible our local health advice.

https://www.runnersworld.com/health-injuries/a35419764/coronavirus-vaccine-for-runners/

Thanks Chris for sharing some good insights into the vaccine and running.

Well that’s a wrap for another week.

Remember to take care of yourself and others.

Happy trails,

Steve
