Greetings KRew

Welcome to the first KR run for 2025, a new year and new beginnings as we head into the second quarter of the 21st Century.

The New Year is a time where we can look out at the unlimited possibilities of the year ahead. Reflect on what our goals, dreams and ambitions are for the coming year. As runners we think about what our running goals will be, and I like how Strava prompts us to set some running goals with the distance that we might try to do in the coming year, then each month offers badges as rewards for achieving goals.

Personally, I know I like to have a series races lined up to help keep me motivated into a new year, this I find helps with ensuring that I do go out running as each training runs adds a little bit more to my preparation for the races ahead. What do you like to do to keep yourself motivated?

In the coming year KR will have a series of focus races, that is races that we will promote and encourage as many people to enter, as well as come to support or be official volunteers, currently we are looking at:

 Sun Run – 1st February

Canberra marathon – 13th April

Hoka half – 4th May (Star Wars Day)

City to Surf – 10 August

TCS Sydney Marathon – 31 August

Bare Creek – 2nd November (a trail race as something different for KR)

There are going to some others as well, such as The Real Insurance 10k, Sydney Olympic Park 10k and Half Marathon. As well as a few races that might be a bit different or a favourite of ours and share with you all as something to consider. Some races have already sold out such as Gold Coast and Melbourne Marathons, both of which are awesome races and if you are fortunate enough to have secured an entry then you will be having a fantastic time.

We will also have some more social events, both with and without running involved. The first of which will be the Annual KR Beer Mile organised by the twice reigning champion Brian and his offsider Mark. Stay tuned for more awesome events.

Reflections on 2024 the Year that was.

Usually at this time of year I like to reflect on the year that we’ve had in KR. It has been a busy year, with a lot of events happening. I think over all we have seen many members achieve running goals that they may not have thought possible at the beginning of the year. It seemed that at almost every race, no matter the distance the KRew were out there racing, giving it their all and getting many new PBs, we even had a few podium finishes and many age group wins in the club.

On the social side, we had some successful events, starting with the beer mile, followed by some social evenings, and some beer runs. A highlight was of course the 2024 Christmas party and one of the biggest turnouts for a social event that we’ve ever had.

Then each and every week throughout the whole year, we’ve had KR10k on the Monday and KRClassic on Thursday and our speed and interval training at Gore Hill Oval each Tuesday. I’m pleased to say that no matter what has been happening, KR never missed a Monday or Thursday run, quite an achievement for a volunteer run, social running club.

Of course, none of this works without the committee who help make all this happen. So a big thank you to Brian, who helps me and is the host for Monday nights. Tully who has taken on some of our social media and Strava presence, organising our monthly long runs as well being the back fill for Brian on a Monday and sometimes me on Thursday. Then there is Alex who takes care of our Instagram accounts and ensures that it stays fresh and engaging and will sometimes host for me on a Thursday. Lastly Greg who has joined us as social director and has set up and run some great social events and I look forward to seeing what he has install for us in 2025.

A big thank you to Evelyn and Mark who have been invaluable in allowing us to store our bags in their cars throughout the year, and to Tully, Brian, Seleh and Georgie who have kindly brought their cars when we’ve needed them.

Lastly, thank you to each and everyone of our awesome KRew who come along and join us for run across the bridge each week or run circles each Tuesday. To the support and encouragement I see some many people give to other members.  Without you all it would be a bit lonely running across the bridge each week. I can’t wait to see what we will do and achieve 2025!!

Upcoming Events

Many local and Australian 2025 races are now open for registration and if you think you will run any of them, I encourage you to sign up straight away as they will sell out. (Both Gold Coast marathon and half marathon, along with Melbourne marathon have already sold out.)

Sun Run is always a great way to kick off the year of racing with a quick 10k dash from Dee Why to Manly. https://www.sunrun.com.au/

Canberra Marathon 2025 registration is now open. I’m expecting a big contingent of the KRew will be heading to Canberra for this beautiful Autumn Day run through our Nation’s Capitol. The Canberra Times Marathon Festival 2025 | Sole Motive

The Hoka Half in May is now open and you better be quick as the 10k race has already sold out. https://runawaysydneyhalf.com.au/

Of course, there are many races throughout the year that the KR will do, such as those out at Sydney Olympic Park and around the foreshore. We will highlight as many we think of, but if you have one to promote you think the KRew will love, let us know!

If you want to find some for yourself, I highly recommend using The Running Calendar website which lists just about every race in Australia. https://www.runningcalendar.com.au/

Tuesday Speed Sessions have finished for 2024 but stay tuned as they will be back in January 2025.

If you are bringing bags tonight Evelyn, we will be there with her car to hold them whilst you run. (But please pick them up as soon as we have finished the run!) Thank you, Evelyn, very much appreciated!!

That’s a wrap for this week; remember to take care of yourself and others.

Keep running into 2025 @everyone and happy trails,

Steve
