Greetings KRew

I know this is something that we have all been wanting and we have only a few days left till we will run together again! Happily this coming Monday KR10k will be back with Chris Rudge hosting and we will be meeting at the usual time of 6:30pm for a 6:40pm start. Then next Thursday 2nd December KRClassic will officially return meeting at 6:30pm for a 6:40pm start, followed by the usual socialising, (depending on numbers and if they let us into the pub). Please remember that as the NSW government has pushed out the date from 1 December to 15 December for the unvaccinated to join the rest of society, I ask that you please do NOT join us if you are not fully vaccinated by this time. Thank you!

Happy Thanksgiving to our USA KRew, this morning a few us ran a Turkey Trot on the KRClassic course and finished with some coffee at the end which was a bit of fun.

As I talked about in the last two newsletters, racing is starting up again in both Sydney and Melbourne which is great news for many of us. I’m please to say that last weekend I was very happy to have my first post-lockdown race when I did the GNW 50 miler with Margriet and Sophie who took on the 100k event. We all survived and had a great weekend on a very tough course in some very challenging conditions.

The first weekend in December is a big one with 4 races, that I know about, being held. On the Saturday is the Sydney Striders 10km event which is open for their financial members, I know we have heap of KR who will be there testing themselves on a quick 10k course. Also that day is the 30km Coastal Classic running from Otford to Bundeena in Royal National Park, that we have few of KRew who will be there repping the red.

Then on the Sunday another two, quite different races, the Real Insurance Sydney Harbour 10km is another fast flat friendly 10k event that many of the KRew will be toeing the start line. The other event that day is the Bare Creek 20km up in St Ives and is run mainly on the Striders Equaliser Course. Quite a few of us will be heading up there for that run through some of the beautiful north shore bushlands.

Sunday 12 December it will be Melbourne Marathon, and I know we have a lot of the KRew heading down there for that race as well. I wish everyone well for this as I know there are several folks who have used lockdown to concentrate on their running and doing some intense training programs and going out for a PB.

On Sunday 19th December we have the KR Annual Christmas Party, no running, but lots of eating, drinking and talking about running!!!

Taper Time

I find that training plans are a good approach when working towards a big running goal. The last stage of these plans is the taper period and that part feels like it is surrounded with mystery.

It got me thinking, and I had a few questions. I wanted to know, what is the taper? How will it benefit me? How long should I taper for? What should I eat and, ultimately what should I do week by week?

After doing some research I found this article that answers many of these questions. SO whether you’re an advanced runner or see yourself more as a beginner, this a good one to read. Pleaes share your thoughts on what makes for a good taper in the comments below.

Thanks Chris for helping us to understand the mysteries of the “taper”.

Well that’s a wrap for another week, enjoy your KRClassic Virtual run today and don’t forget to share some photos with us all on the KR FB page.

Remember to take care of yourself and others. And wash your hands, wear a mask and remember to socially distance.

Happy trails,
