Greetings KRew

I know that, like me, many of you believe that we are all so fortunate to live in Sydney and to be able to run across such an emblematic icon of Sydney each week. In fact as I’ve said to many of you, I think I’ve run out of superlatives that I can use to describe the joy of KRClassic each week as we head over the Bridge and round the Opera House, never forgetting that little rise on the Cahill that we all love so much.

Of course running is not restricted to Thursday nights and many of us run everyday, or nearly every day remembering the need to rest occasionally and allow your body to rebuild itself. Many of us like to run with friends, some alone, and most of us love the challenge of a race or timed run such as parkrun. It’s great that parkrun in Australia is back in full swing and I dropped in to North Sydney last weekend and it was great to see so many KR taking on that 5km course of 4 laps and lots of smiles at the end as folks finished. It was then a treat to go for brunch at The Library on Miller St and share food and the post run glow that everyone had on.

Talking of racing, this weekend is 6 Foot Track and KR have a small contingent heading up tomorrow night in preparation for the 45km mountain marathon. I know all of KR wishes the racers well and to make sure that we get lots of photos as you go!

More immediately though is the KRClassic tonight, as usual Joy and I will get there about 6pm to welcome you and we are still running out in smaller groups so as to spread the Red Shirts out on the bridge. But no matter whether you want to start a bit earlier, or at the more traditional time of 6:40pm, I will be there to see you, and Joy will be there with her car to store your bags should you need it. Can I ask that you please have your bags stored by 6:40pm so that we can all head out for a run across the bridge?

And can I also ask that you please register your attendance at this link:

https://kirribillirunners.org/covid/

Or I will have a QR code tonight for you to register as you arrive.

Each week we have still been try to do the picnic in the park (rain and cool evenings are not helping) and it is getting more popular with the KRew post the KRClassic, so grab your preferred bevy and pizza and come and join us under the bridge. Also as the COVID rules are relaxing a few are starting to head back to the Kirribilli Hotel for a beer or two before pizza which is great. So whatever you choose I do hope that you can stay socialise with the KR post the run!

This week I’ve spoken to our resident locksmith, Lyndal about her running journey.

Your name and/or running nickname?

Lyndal, no nicknames – that I’m aware of, or answer to!

How long have you been running?

On and off since I was a kid.

What inspires you to keep running?

Chocolate. Mostly just chocolate!

What’s the coolest place you have ever run?

Hmmm….. if I had to pick just one, I’d say along the English coastline from Lands End to Mousehole in Cornwall with Bill. Spectacular and so much fun!

How do you feel at the start of a run?

Usually a bit apprehensive and itching to get on with it, then when I start my legs tell me how I’ll be feeling for the rest of it.

When you see another runner coming towards you, what do you do?

Always try to smile and say hi (probably comes out as a grimace and grunt more often than not).

What’s the most interesting thing that has ever happened to you whilst running?

Realised I was running with a wombat. Don’t think she was too happy about the company, but there we were!

What do your friends think of your running?

They’re used to me. It’s just one of those things I do that they know I’ll be back in touch when I’m done.

What do you do with your clothes immediately after you get home a run?

Sit around in them till I stop sweating, then they go into the clothes’ basket.

What’s the one thing you wish you’d been told before you started running?

You don’t have to be the best to have fun. Just do your thing and enjoy the moment.

Thanks Lyndal that’s awesome, just curious though, did the wombat beat you?

Next week as part of my new miniseries of talking to KR couples, I speak to Lyndal’s husband and our resident dive master Bill.

Sleep Hygiene for Optimizing Recovery in Athletes

How glorious can sleep be? I think that after running sleep is one of my most favourite past times. Particularly after a tough training session the day before you can wake up feeling totally refreshed and ready for the next big challenge.

Last week I was speaking with KRs’ Dr Richard about a range of health topics and the importance of sleep in managing my fitness came up. He put me onto this publication about sleep hygiene for optimising recovery in athletes. The really interesting part of this article for all aspiring marathoners chasing a PB or just wanting to do well is that banking extra sleep before a race can translate to improved performance. Read on to find out more:

Thanks Chris for sharing some good tips there on the importance of sleep.

Well that’s a wrap for another week.

Remember to take care of yourself and others.

 Happy trails,

 Steve
