Fellow Runners,

We had another terrific turn-out last Thursday which is always great to see. Extolling the virtues of the evening was Rob S—‘Great evening, good company and the run wasn’t half bad either.’  Di, too, was beholdened by the night—‘Had a nice chatty run with Amy. Lovely cooler evening!’ An exhilarated Paul D made a night of it too—‘PB . . . whoo hoo!’  Also quick off the mark was a certain Dave C: ‘Ran at target half marathon pace. Maybe I should reassess and relax.’ To employ one of the worst expressions in vogue this year—‘bouncebackabiltiy’*—Peter L, it would seem, was subject to its forces:  ‘Good return run after injury.’  Carolina, on the other hand, found herself on a plateau with very little bounce: ‘Same time  . . . any advice to improve?’ (The best thing to do is to increase one’s longest weekly run.)**  For reasons that remain undisclosed Robin V decided to embark upon ‘a build run.’ This ‘build run’ included running ‘12 k’ from the precipitous suburb of Castlecrag. (He also, with Peter L, arrived at a ‘tottometer reading’ of 4; more of this curiosity is to be found in previous newsletters.) In the meantime Naomi was recuperating from full-blown, as it were, physiological peril: ‘Lungs feel like they were going to burst but feel great now.’ Richard A ‘felt less great’, owing to issues of a thermoregulatory nature: ‘Much slower than last week but it was the damn sauna of a lift.’ While this was going on, our Norwegian friend Alexander ‘Felt quite good . . . managed to keep up with Richard and Megan for a while.’ Amy, also new to the group, had a successful first run: ‘Great scenic run, loved it! And discovered the lift [well worth discovering!]’ OK, that running calendar once again (it’s since been updated to now include events over July and August; entries for the City to Surf open in three days’ time):***

*Bouncebackability. An expression nearly as bad—but not quite—as ‘key performance indicator/s’. So toe-curlingly bad is the latter that anyone who uses it in a pub should be banned. (Those familiar with the modes of executive ambition will recognise the overuse of this expression.)

** Having said this, though, you should not increase your training load by more than ten percent from week- to-week (otherwise you’ll either get injured or fed-up; humans, of course, are only good at accommodating change/growth in small increments). For example, if you’re running fifty kilometres any given week don’t do more than fifty-five kilometres the following. (The same applies re the intensity of your run, i.e. don’t exert yourself more than ten percent in relation to your previous week’s effort). So, like being successful at anything in life, the key is this: have big, exciting long-term goals and work slowly but surely towards them. As Leonardo Da Vinci was well aware, excellence/genius (at anything) comes from patience. Or, as the French naturalist George-Louis Buffon put it, ‘Genius is only a greater aptitude for patience.’ They’re both most certainly right.

**** For official results see <www.smhhalfmarathon.com.au/>. Rudd provides us with the following report: ‘The Great Ocean Road half marathon was a great experience. It’s hilly (the biggest one 50 metres after the start), scenic (we saw a number of koalas in the trees) and the weather was very kind to us (the sun in our back for most of the race). I would recommend this to any runner. My time was ok as well, 23 seconds short of 2 hours, and given the hilly track, I’m very pleased with it. Bring on the Gold Coast marathon next!’

***** Those still to collect KR singlets/shirts: Amanda Bauer, Gareth Dando, Melissa Alt, Ann Kingsland.

KR Ski trip 19-24/26 August (Gareth)

After the success of last year's inaugural ski trip, we're planning a larger scale effort for 2012, and are hoping to get a big group together to go to Thredbo. All levels of skier and boarder are welcome, from total beginners to experts. The tentative plan at this stage is to have a week's rest following the City2Surf (Sun Aug 12) then go for 4-6 days skiing from Sun 19th - Fri 24th / Sun 26th. Depending on numbers we'll rent one or more lodges / apartments to make the apres-ski easier. Indicative costs would be around $700-1000 per head for the accommodation, and about $100-120/day for ski pass / lessons / equipment hire, depending on what you need. We can pool cars and cook together, so transport and meals should be cheap. The only likely blow-out will be the wine bill :)If you're (even vaguely) interested please let me know (gda...@sxvp.com) so I can put you on the 'maybe' list. I'll firm up numbers over the next month or so and book early to get a good place.  If you want to find out more or discuss options just catch me on a Thursday night . Hope to see you there. Gareth
