Greetings KRew

I was in a waiting room the other day reading an article in Reader’s Digest on the development of the English language dictionary, and among all the interesting facts it mentioned, was the word with the most definitions.

Can you guess what it is?

Well, the word with the most definitions is a three letter word that we all know and love; ‘run’, which comes in with 645 separate meanings and that is in just its' verb form. We KRs though, we know the only one meaning of the word ‘run’ and that is what we do on our legs in order to move quickly across the Sydney Bridge on the KRClassic.

Don't forget this weekend is the Australian Running Festival in Canberra for which I know we have a large contingent repping the Red across multiple events from the 50k, the marathon, the half and the 10km. If you are still after a lift please reach out to the KRew on the FB page as I know a lot of us are driving down on both Friday and Saturday and hopefully can help you out.

However, more immediately tonight’s KRClassic, Joy and I will get there from about 6pm or so to welcome you and while some folks are still running out in smaller groups, as restrictions have really eased we are heading back to the group start at 6:40pm. But, no matter whether you want to start a bit earlier, or at the more traditional time of 6:40pm, Joy will be there with her car to store your bags should you need it. Can I ask though, that you please have your bags stored by 6:40pm so that we can all head out for a run across the bridge?

And can I also ask that you please register your attendance at this link:

https://kirribillirunners.org/covid/

Or I will have a QR code tonight for you to register as you arrive.

Also as the COVID rules are relaxing a few of the KRew are starting to head back to the Kirribilli Hotel for a beer or two before pizza which is great. So whatever you choose I do hope that you can stay socialise with the KR post the run!

This week I managed to talk to Vanessa about her running journey. If you recall two weeks I ago I spoke to her husband Josh about his journey and it is great to hear from his running inspiration, his wife.

Your name and/or running nickname?

Vanessa. Ness is my most popular nickname but other running nicknames include 'Lil V' and 'Pocket Rocket' due to my diminutive stature!

How long have you been running?

I did athletics in primary and high school (200m was my favourite event) and played netball in high school (was Centre and Wing Attack which involved a lot of running) but it wasn't until 2010 that I did my first City2Surf and that really motivated me to start running more seriously.

What inspires you to keep running?

Not in any order: strong women runners, older runners that are fitter and stronger than you, my husband Josh who is now faster than me and my love of food #thereasonirun

What's the coolest place you have ever run?

As my darling hubby has already told you about Nambour Parkrun, I'll be a rebel and say the hottest place I have ever run in is Miri, Malaysia, where I ran 3km in the morning with my younger brother in what felt like 100% humidity, it was fantastic conditioning and set me up for the Blackmores Bridge Run a few weeks later.

How do you feel at the start of a run?

Keen to get started and anxious butterflies if it's a big race and I have a PB goal. Before my first Blackmores Half Marathon I felt like I was going to throw up my breakfast but I managed to hold it down and reminded myself that I had done the training and could do it! I loathe the wait time before a race, particularly if it is cold and you're trying to keep warm, I just want to get on with it!

When you see another runner coming towards you, what do you do?

I'm pretty friendly so either a smile, wave, head nod or words of encouragement however if it's during a race, it depends on how I am feeling at the time!

What's the most interesting thing that has ever happened to you whilst running?

I was at the Toowoomba Parkrun with Josh and ran with my brother in law's dog Bear who weighs about 20kg and was never in front of me. I had to drag Bear along and tried to encourage her to keep moving, I am convinced that Bear is part dog, part pig and part seal as she flopped down and refused to move at times! I could only manage one lap of the park (2.5kms) before handing her over to another brother in law who had finished the run already.

What do your friends think of your running?

Some are impressed, some are nonchalant, only my running friends totally get it.

What do you do with your clothes immediately after you get home from a run?

I air dry them and either put them in the laundry basket or straight into the wash if I have enough for a full load and the weather is good.

What's the one thing you wish you'd been told before you started running?

How quickly you can lose your fitness if you don't run regularly and how awful it is running whilst you are menstruating, only the women will fully understand this; solidarity my strong sisters!

Thanks for sharing Vanessa that’s awesome and I’m sure it is much quicker to run a parkrun without dragging a large dog around!!

Race Day Strategies

With all the excitement in the club about the Australian Running Festival in Canberra happening this weekend got me thinking about the marathons I have run and what worked and what did. Some of the not so wise decisions I have made are to do with clothing, pace and race nutrition. You know though, at one level it made life harder, but also strangely sweeter and more exhilarating at the finish.

I hope that you enjoy this article and for those racing in Canberra all the best on Sunday!

Thanks Chris for sharing and yes something for all us who are racing in Canberra this weekend!

Well that’s a wrap for another week.

Remember to take care of yourself and others.

Happy trails,

Steve
