A scientist in Kiribati says awareness is growing about climate
change, but there is still division over how serious the problem is.
A workshop has been held on the main island of Tarawa, organised by
the Kiribati Adaptation Project, aiming at creating an understanding
of the issues and recommending strategies.
The national consultant on climate change and sea level rise, Dr
Temakei Tebano, says there are preparations Kiribati can do on its
own, and other developments it needs international help with:
"There are many thoughts about how big the threat is.
This morning people having been throwing out ideas.
On one extreme end they say that God told Noah there would be no more
floods.
On the other end people are saying no, we must be prepared for
anything."
Dr Temakei Tebano says the country needs strategies on what to do in
the short, medium and long term.
