Last summer, I was asked to do a drawing of a Sunflower for a friend. While I think Sunflowers in nature are very beautiful, they can be tricky to draw because of their large brown/black, seedy centers. I searched through countless reference images to find one that minimized the look of those centers and would still work for my friend. No luck. So, here is the reference I initially picked:

The love and excitement you have for the drawing will show through in the end. Your heart will be in it. In fact, I would not be surprised if you guys can tell which of my own drawings I do not really love. There are a few.? Looking back on these, I realize that they were doomed from the start.

In an attempt to find a great tip for a beginner, I decided to look through some of my very first drawings in hopes that it would jog my memory and help me think of some things that I found helpful at that time.

Some of these drawings were from tutorials where a photo reference was provided as well as a finished drawing from the artist. Instead of following along with the tutorial by using the reference image, I followed along with the tutorial by using the completed drawing provided.

I am not suggesting that you do this forever. I probably copied 5-10 paintings and drawings before I started working from actual reference photos. It was an opportunity to learn how my pencils worked and blended and to learn about the paper I was drawing on. It was an opportunity to practice the drawing techniques I was learning without the added pressure of deciphering a reference image at the same time.

So, I hope this helps some of you who are in the very early stages of learning. It might help you to work from one of my drawings rather than the reference I provide. We learn from copying others! I am giving you permission to not feel bad about that.?

Here's a better way to make a pencil drawing from a photo. Download the G'MIC plugin for the GIMP. Go to Filters -> G'MIC. In the list of filters, open up the "Black & White" section. In there, click on "Pencil portrait". Click OK. Wait a while as this can be CPU intensive, but the results are worth it. I've attached an image with the default parameters.

i had almost finished it.. I wanted to make a pencil draw effect.. this tutorial was nice.. And by viewing this article, i went to do that exactly with the same pic.. But, as i am new to GIMP, i cant get the last part.. "On my image I have applied a layer mask over the line drawing so there is a transition between photo and line drawing."

in the layers dialogue right click on the layer that has the line drawing: "Add layer mask" (select white in the popup dialog). there will now be a new layer right beside the layer now in the layers dialogue. it will be fully white. click it to activate it. this is the so called mask -> you can only draw black and white and gray tones. then take the gradient tool, set FG and BG color to black and white and drag a gradient from (i.e.) left to right. then the part that is black on the layer mask becomes (semi)transparent.

I am an absolute beginner but desperately need to be able to do this exact thing for an important project. I've downloaded the progam and followed each step, but each time I try, at Step 4 it all goes to pot. How do I set value 4 to the selective gaussian blur? I've tried dozens of times - I can even get all the way to setting the duplicated merged layer to 'dodge' but what I end up with looks nothing like a pencil drawing! It's getting close to 'banging head on the desk' time so can someone PLEASE tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Apple Pencil support is also essential for me when working with Obsidian on iPad. Basically all my productivity tools from classic apps like the Office suite to pure web apps I use support the Apple Pencil and drawing even in the browser.
For Obsidian to get Apple Pencil support would be one of the greatest addition in terms of productivity that I could currently wish for.

Another common mistake is using a rectangular reference photo with a horizontal configuration and turning the drawing paper vertically. This will cause the drawing to be way too wide and not fit into the quadrants correctly. Fortunately, this error is usually seen with the placement of the first few lines, and easily corrected with a turn of the paper.

Once students are successful with the Quadrant Method, I move through the Shape Method of Drawing , Negative Space, then we explore visually communicating Form through the use of Value with graphite pencil.

Later in the semester, when I got to my pencil drawing Value Unit, I thought I would revisit the shoes. I put the kids in groups of 4 and they took close up photos of the piles of shoes. I even told them a day ahead about the photo shoot so they could wear their most interesting pair.

In between the Quadrant Method and this Shoe Frenzy lesson, students have learned how to build an object with shapes, how to build an object using only Negative Space, and how to create a form out of a shape by adding Value. The foundation has been set for a challenging realistic drawing that requires strict observation, sound skills, and rock solid confidence.

I stand up in front with a piece of 10 x 12 inch drawing paper and I explain that we will be doing this together. Everyone gets their paper, their pencil, their ruler and we go through these steps:

Scaffolding skills works. I have seen the success for all students over the past 13 years, and it is the real deal. For more info on the details of the scaffold, check out the other blog posts on this page, there are a few that speak to scaffolding for both drawing and painting for all skill levels.

The river rock turned out to be quite fun to do. I used a white pencil to blend and burnish the colors which gave the rocks a smooth, yet mottled appearance. The stripy stone at the bottom was a nice challenge of textures and I keep tit rough looking by not doing any blending, just adding stippled layers of color. The final part worked was the big stepping stone which was also simply stippled and left unblended.

My grown daughter lives in New Hampshire and I live in Florida. She had an idea of how we could share some time together. She signed us up for an online drawing class! The class was offered through a local nature conservancy called The Harris Center. (Link at bottom of page.)

To draw with Apple Pencil in a page layout document in Pages, a spreadsheet in Numbers, or a slide in Keynote on a supported iPad, tap your Pencil on the page. In a word-processing document in Pages, tap again where you want to add the drawing area.

If you've added a drawing in a Pages, Numbers, or Keynote file on iPhone or iPad, you can animate the drawing, share it, or save it to Photos as an image or movie file when you open that file on a Mac.

I conduct only 6 - 8 classes per year and these sell out fast. If you would like to request to be on a waiting list for a workshop, please Contact me. My Workshop Email List is the best way to to be notified of upcoming workshops so you don't miss out.

Although students will learn advanced drawing techniques, these three day drawing lessons are structured to be beneficial for all levels of students. The limited class size insures individual attention. Students will learn the techniques necessary to render a variety of textures realistically with graphite, carbon, charcoal, and various blending techniques.

Image Trace lets you convert raster images (JPEG, PNG, PSD etc.) to vector artwork. Using this feature, you can easily base a new drawing on an existing piece of artwork by tracing it. For example, you can convert the image of a pencil sketch you've drawn on paper into vector artwork using Image Trace. You can choose from a set of tracing presets to get the desired result quickly.

A lot of my drawings don't work out but I remind myself that the next one will be an improvement on the last because that is the way it works. In the meantime, I keep copying simple drawings and loving every minute of it.

They work by clicking the end of the pencil which pushes the graphite lead through the tip. The graphite leads come in different sizes, it doesn't really matter which one you use at the start - I use .5mm.

This drawing below looks complicated but if you look carefully, you will notice the only thing that has an outline is the building. All the rest of the picture was created with small strokes.I love to see the trees emerge out of those little lines.

Both Simplified's text-to-image generator and Dall-E are able to create images from textual descriptions. However, Simplified's Text to Image generator sources images based on your input, while Dall-E creates a new image. Both tools are based on a type of artificial intelligence known as a transformer, which is designed to learn from a large amount of data and then generate new data from what it has learned.

Thankfully, you can learn how to turn a picture into a line drawing in Photoshop CC 2019 following the photo editing steps below. Images of objects isolated on a white background work best for this technique, making this a great option for modifying or enhancing product photos.
