I have two enemies close together and approximately in line with each other. I have only a 5% chance to hit either, because their evasion is high and my gunnery skill is low. But if I fire off 12 SRMs at the closer enemy, about half to a third of them seem to hit the farther-away enemy as "stray shots," even though if I were to deliberately target the farther-away enemy most/all of my shots would miss.
This does not make sense; surely the odds of hitting an enemy on accident when trying to target something else can't be higher than the odds of hitting when deliberately aiming at it? Or to put it another way, if the 2nd mech is so easy to hit that simply firing a volley in their general direction without actually aiming will result in many of the shots hitting, why are my odds to hit with an aimed shot only 5%?

A 6-year-old girl, Kinsley White, was grazed by a bullet in the left cheek and was treated at a hospital and released, she and her family said. Her father, Jamie White, who had run to her aid, was shot in the back. He remained hospitalized Wednesday with serious wounds, including liver damage, according to Kinsley's grandfather and neighbor, Carl Hilderbrand. The girl's mother, Ashley Hilderbrand, was grazed in the elbow. Authorities say Singletary also shot at another man but missed.
