Ice on Hamilton Harbour

Hi everyone.

Todays mild temps have gone a long way to cleaning up the ice. This evening and tomorrow will also see slightly above freezing which may allow for some further resurfacing to happen. 

Sunday's forecast looks very favourable so I am aiming to check the ice early Sunday morning starting around 8am. Once I have checked, I will send out an email with my findings.

I have high hopes the ice will be good but we won't count our chickens before they hatch.

That's what we saw from the Skyway on Thursday. Out to Randle Reef. Looks a bit more open then Thursday.

Quick update from Frenchmans Bay in Pickering.

I walked the bay today. Fisherman confirmed the ice is 2 feet thick.

But there is still 2 inches of crusty snow on top.

Need some more warm sunny weather to get rid of that.

No shortage of ice fishing on the west end of the Harbour.  Anecdotal report was that, it was firm and safe for them.  Needs a good walk tomorrow morning.

Perfect Ice is worth waiting for.

Sailing brutal conditions only makes great ice even better.

I get that.

Not at the tail end of a winter...

And it is March.

I just walked LaSalle. There is half and inch of light snow over nice ice. Better than on Tuesday. There was some holes still open from ice fishermen and it’s still well over 14” thick. Rob and Cathy are on their way from NOTL so I am going to set up. There is wind and everything.

Hello everyone

Today I did a total survey of the west end and the results were still quite good. The 2 days of mild weather really helped make the surface very nice. Some areas were 10/10, black ice, other areas with some crusty ice but black, 6/10. Some areas were a mix of snow and black ice, 10/10 and again some crusty snow ice, 6/10. There were still some mounds about an 1" thick that were the remnants of some slush that hadn't quite melted. Fortunately, it was all rounded edges so it was less bumpy.

Ice thickness.

8" by the breakwater in front of the yacht club.

10" out along the pressure ridge.

12" along the north shore, about 200m out.

8" out by Carol's point.

10" out front of Harbourfront park.

12" in the area in front of Pier 4 park.

Based on the long range forecast for Hamilton ( Weather  Network), tomorrow will be the last day in the 14 day forecast with below zero temps. Cold tonight and into Tuesday but Tuesday the temp will be around +3 and rain. Not until Mar 14 and 15 is it forecast to be zero. This Friday +8 and Saturday +14. I will be sailing the west end tomorrow and then taking our stuff off the ice.
