Hi all,

James « T" Thieler has called the 2026 Easterns on this coming weekend at Lake Moosehead, Maine.
It’s a 5 hr drive from here, so I’m giving it a pass.

However weekend forecast for West Island is also looking good, with rain this week to wash snow away, then some -13 Cs at night to firm things up, so don’t put away yer runners just yet.

Stay tuned for developments, as we just might be sailing in April. !!!

A.

Hello all
It seems that lac saint fancois is good for next weekend (iceboat of Thetford) they have a Facebook page and there are chances they go on the ice Saturday. Anyone interested ? I’ve never been but I guess it’s huge and fantastic

Cheers.

Grand Lac St Francois is a big lake, but why go there if we have good ice here ? Thetford is 3 hrs away, another 20 minutes to the lake.
I say it should be Plan B.
Good accommodation at Hotel du Domaine.

Hi All,

The big plate on lake St. Louise  is gone, so we are left with bay of Baie D’Urfe. As of 15:30 there is about 3-4 cm of very wet snow on the top of about 8-9 inches of ice ( maybe more)  with rain showers still to come and temperature staying above freezing late into the night I hope this will turn the snow into a snow ice if not melting it back to the black ice. Since last weekend  the ice under the snow got quite good, making the orange peel more even, still sticky but over all good surface to ride on (I call it 8).
During the night we should go down to -6C and stay at -1C all day tomorrow with some sun and 20 km/h winds. What I am trying to say is that there is a very good chance that we will start sailing tomorrow and all through Sunday (forecast looks OK). Because it is the end of the season I have to mention that there is a very small chance that the hovercraft could return tomorrow and break the ice but without calling the Coast Guard I can’t say. It is a small chance but  i figured I mention this in case you plan to travel.
My plan and possibly few local sailors is to try to launch from either Baie D”Urfe city hall park or St. Louis Park depending where the access is better and sail.
Last weekend we were able to set the race course about 900m and since I didn’t see any changes in the sailable plate it should be the same no matter what is the wind direction.
Tomorrow morning I will post an update once I will get to the ice around 10 am to confirm and if anyone would like get more details please don’t hesitate to call me.

Hi All,

Baie D’Urfe still has about a foot of ice. I wasn’t able to break through after making about 9 “ hole. The top is covered with 1-3 cm of a frozen granulated snow that seems like a granuled sugar forming a type of a coating pancake like. I think the runner should go through it. I don’t think I have ever sailed on such a surface but I think it is still sailable. Closer to shore I found few drifts about 2” deep ( see photo) but I don’t think there were many or any on the lake. The wind forecast for today is about 20-30 km/h and that should help. Long story short until I rig the boat and try we will not know, so I am going to Bertold Park around 10 am and will rig my boat.

Andre, Peter, JP and I sailed today ( they actually still sailing). The snow on the top of ice was a bit of a challenge to get boats going in light wind but as soon as we got some 10 knots all boat were a full on go. The ice underneath is a bit rough ( just like last weekend) but it is still OK to go at full speed, etc. We agreed that this ice is sailable but racing maybe a bit of a challenge. Anyhow, tomorrow I will set the course and Nicola and I will definitely try to race. Over all this is not the best ice, especially with some snow on the top but it is the last time for sure. Next two days we have good weather forecast, including wind so I think we will enjoy it. If you plan coming from a distance please feel free to call me for more details as I don’t want anyone to be disappointed.
Jacek
