The overwhelming support extended to the kisan andolan by social movements across the world testifies to its wider relevance, and the insights this struggle can offer for progressive movements elsewhere.
Building alliances around shared interests and identities is inherently a local and context-specific process, but the kisan andolan demonstrates how social movements can successfully navigate competing political imperatives: formulating demands that resonate strongly with different actors, while continuing to effectively confront state and corporate power.
The chipko andolan( hug of the trees movement) was the result of a grass-root level effort to end, alienation of people from their forests. The movement originated from an incident in a remote village called Reni in Garhwal. There was a dispute between local people and a logging contractor who had been allowed by the government to fell trees in the forest. On a particular day, the contractor's workers appeared in the forest to cut the trees while the men folks were absent. But the women of the village reached the forest quickly and clasped the tree trunks thus preventing the workers from felling the trees. Thus thwarted, the contractor had to withdraw.What would have happened, if chipko andolan did not arise?
The most significant achievement of the PDS andolan was that the state government raised the income limit poverty line for ration cards from Rs.4000 per year to Rs.15000 per year. Approximately, 10 lakh families in the state additionally got yellow ration cards (BPL) due to this decision. In the tribal area where the SJA is active, thousands of tribal and non-tribal families benefited from this decision.
SJA also participated in a state level seminar on challenging the government definition of the poverty line. Several trade unions, representatives of political parties participated in this seminar. The struggle still continues in streamlining the functioning of ration shops.
