poom is effectively a transitional or intermediate rank for students transitioning from junior color belt grades to adult degrees. For example, if a Taekwondo student attains Black Belt but is under 15, he is given the Poom level.
The Poom taekwondo belt means that a student has fulfilled both academic and competence standards but does not exhibit the same degree of self-defense capacity as an adult. Being given a Poom belt before the age of 15 is an achievement. Students who do so demonstrate tremendous potential in the sport of Taekwondo.
In taekwondo you move in rank as you progress in your training and as you do, the belt color changes from white to diferent colors until you reach the seniority belt which is colored in black. To move from belt to belt you need to pass a series of tests in front of a panel of three judges that will qualifiy all the necessary aspects like technique, strenght control, among others.
Depending on the belt you might also have to pass a combat test in which you will show, in combat, all the learned skills. Now, there is also a minimum age for a student to reach the black belt which is 15 years old. When the student has not met this requirement, then he or she is required to wear the poom belt, where poom signifies junior black belt.

Grading or promotion tests are organised quarterly by the Singapore Taekwondo Federation. These are important events for the trainees as the occasions provide them the opportunity to gauge their progress in the sport. The grading requirements provided in this page serves as a guidelines and it is subjected to changes from time to time by the Singapore Taekwondo Federation.
The STF dan certification will be awarded from 15 years old in line with Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Headquarters). The following poom and dan age limits for promotion test requirements will be adopted with immediate effect from 6 June 2008.
The conversion from poom to dan is not automatic. Poom belt holders must apply for dan conversion through their respective club coaches. Coaches are to monitor the applicants to ensure they have the standard of a dan holder before endorsing their applications. It can be assumed that poom belt holders who have stopped training for an extended period do not have the standard. For example, a 17-year poom belt holder cannot be still good if he has not been training for more than six months. Therefore, coaches must advise them that they to train for a period before recommending them for the conversion. All poom belter holders are advised to apply for dan conversion on reaching the age of 15. If you apply later, you will be at a disadvantage because the time frame for your next dan will start from the date of issue of the dan certificates.

Poom belt holders have to continue training to qualify for conversion. If they stop training after obtaining their grade, they will have to re-join the club and train at least six months before they can apply for conversion.
The six-month training requirement is for the coaches to assess the suitability of their poom belt holders for the conversion. If the coaches are not satisfied, they have the right to prescribe a longer training period for their trainees before endorsing the applications for conversion.
When numbering the dan ranks, Sino-Korean numbers are used (rather than traditional Korean numbers). In other words, the ranks are like those that we use when talk about Forms/Poomsae: Il dan, ee dan, sam dan, etc.
Korean martial arts lacked a grading system up until the Japanese occupation of Korea (1910-1945) during which a variety of Japanese martial arts were introduced into the Korean culture. After the Japanese occupation ended, newly emerging martial arts like taekwondo, tang soo do, soo bahk do and hopkido adopted the dan and gup ranks common to Japanese martial arts.
Terminology varies from style to style, but generally someone who is a candidate to receive a Black belt is said to have the rank (dan bo nim). In english, this rank is commonly called bo-dan or bo-black. In some schools, a red-black belt is used to denote a bo-dan rank; in other schools, a red-black belt is used to denote a poom rank.
In some Korean schools, most notably in Kukkiwon/WT style taekwondo, there is also a poom system in place. Practitioners who have not yet reached the age of 15 cannot test for dan rank. For them, there is a system of four poom grade instead. After the student reaches the age of 15, their poom grade can be changed to the corresponding dan grade without additional testing.

Poom belt is children black belt. When they reach 15 years old, they will fill in a form and convert their poom belt certificates to black belt certificates. Then, 1 year later, they will convert the 2nd poom belt to 2nd Dan black belt. And after that, by 18 years old, which is 2 years after the 2nd Dan, then they can convert their 3rd poom belt to 3rd Dan black belt.
This time, the grading is at J.H.Kim Liang Court branch. They have to rent the next door cooking school area to be the extra location for grading. There are 3 STF (Singapore Taekwondo Foundation) examiners coming to grade for all JH.Kim school students.

Learning Taekwondo is good for them. Learning self defence is good for them too especially for Kay. Kay is very small size in body build. So, easily get bullied. Jay is getting fitter day by day. Kay learned how to protect himself too.
