Garritan Concert & Marching Band 2 is state-of-the-art software that reproduces the sounds of the musical instruments in concert and marching bands, right from your computer. This collection is the first library of its kind and fills a major void in the world of sample libraries.
Concert & Marching Band 2 features and array of trumpets, cornets, trombones, mellophones, euphoniums, baritones, tubas, sousaphones, clarinets, piccolos, flutes, saxophones, marching percussion (including drumline from Virtual Drumline 2 by Tapspace), and much more. Ideal for educators teaching band, band students, Band Directors who write drill routines, or for musicians who want to add band instrument sounds to their tracks.

I'm an amateur composer interested in purchasing a high quality orchestral sample library like Garritan Personal Orchestra. The problem is that I plan on composing a piece for my schools concert band, and I can't decide between Garritan's "Personal Orchestral" or the "Concert & Marching Band" sample libraries:

I am in the process of reading Rimsky Korsakov's "Principles of orchestration", so it would be ideal to have a high quality virtual orchestra. I would still use the concert band library for other projects, but I plan on pursuing film/video game composing as a career, and these typically use orchestral sounds. I also just enjoy orchestral music more in general.

Advice from composers/musicians who have experience in both the orchestra and concert band would be greatly appreciated. Do most of the orchestration principles apply to both groups? Would writing one concert band piece while learning orchestration for the orchestra be confusing. Thanks in advance!

Regarding orchestration texts, there are much, much more current things you should be reading such as the Adler and the Blatter texts. Also do yourself a huge favor and get the Solomon book on percussion.

I have both libraries and have used both. The same principles apply with two big exceptions: first, the lack of strings in the band, and second, the difference in percussion instruments. There are minor differences: the band has things like alto clarinets and the whole family of saxes but usually lacks bassoons or oboes.

Use any of the 35 pre-arranged ensemble presets. Build your own ensembles and bands the way you want. Construct wind ensembles, brass bands, drumlines, wind symphonies, a full concert band, marching band and more.

Concert & Marching Band offers you flexibility to position players in different arrangements, change the layout, create your own unique seating arrangements, play separate lines or in unison, and assign solo part by section.

However, some users may be tempted to download a cracked version of COMB2 from illegal sources, such as torrent sites or file sharing platforms. In conclusion, Garritan Concert And Marching Band 2 is a powerful and versatile virtual instrument software that can help you create realistic-sounding band arrangements quickly and easily. some of you are familar with Finale/Sibelius/Soundfonts and arranging, scoring and recording....with the newest addition to the soundfont family, Tapspace's VDL2 www.tapspace.com produces realistic marching and concert percussion sounds, taken from the sampling of SCV's percussion "department", enhancing the recordings of both wind and percussion arrangers. It is very complete, but limited with the specific sound preferences that SCV utilizes.

From here, I have thought about, with the help of Native Instruments and recording technologies, producing a complete Marching Band/Drum Corps Soundfonts, specializing in the unique sounds of the entire ensemble. This .SF or .SF2 format utilizes the PC's or Mac's soundcard, those compatible, to interpret the wav sampling files into MIDI (musical instrument digital interface). It will produce realistic ensemble effect for desired composition for use with Finale2006 (using all 128 channels) and the newest Sibelius music writing/notation/scoring software. the most notible difference will be the marching percussion, front ensemble and differential wind sounds, specific to this idiom. Although a current-up-to date system will be required, including about 7GB of free hard disk space, 512 or greater Ram (1 Gb or more is better), Windows XP, Pentium 4/Athlon 1 GHz minimum, 2 GHz or better OR Macintosh OSX 10.3 or higher, G4 733 MHz minimum, 1.6GHz or higher ...here is a list of what i have thought of...please give me feedback or comments.

It looks like you are trying to invent what is already developed. Digital Drum Tech is a drum line sample library very similar to Tapspace but they use Yamaha and Sabian, Tapspace uses Pearl and Zildjian. VDL:2 already has the sounds that you listed and more, including Drum Major and Drum line "Huhs and Duts." It seems like soundfonts are becoming less and less used simply because you have to own a specific sound card to use them. You mentioned Native Instruments, NI does not produce soundfonts but their own .nki files which are used with their own player and programs and cannot be exported to non-native instruments samplers.

i am aware of all of the above mentioned soundfonts...and their limitations...this is exactly why the market is still a buyer's market. BTW, digital drum tech is off the market, perhaps temporarily or permanent, i dont know. and there are similar sounds that i would like to achieve that tapspace has, but perhaps with much better recording...without so much reverb and concert hall sounds...stadium or outdoor would be much better. the technology is full of options and can be produced...but the main point is a one stop shop soundfont especially for marching, concert band type of sounds...even Garritan and Sonic offer multiple "boxed sets"....i think there is room for better mousetrap to the specific idiom
