I have a few (movie) DVDs that, thanks to repeated mishandling by the kids, don't play very well on the DVD player. But before they got too bad, I managed to make ISO image copies of them - if I recall correctly, I used dd to do this.

I suppose the easy thing to do would be to buy a set of dual layer DVDs and use dd to write to them. But as I already have an external Blu Ray writer and some blank BD-R discs, perhaps it might be better to go down this route.

Ideally I would want to write these discs so that they just automatically play like any other movie when inserted into my (at the moment theoretical) Blu Ray player, instead of users messing around with navigating the file system. And even more ideally I suppose I should be able to fit two or three DVD movies onto one Blu Ray disc.

Does anyone know if this is all easily possible to do without a lot of messing about? I gather that the menu system is completely different on DVDs and Blu Rays, so that may be one problem. And I understand that the movies will not be in 1080p format, but that's fine.

Burn the Blu-ray video disc: Once you've authored your Blu-ray videodisc, you can burn it to a blank BD-R disc using a tool like ImgBurnor Nero. Make sure to select the appropriate settings to ensure thedisc is burned correctly and will play automatically on your player.

If you still want to go ahead, are you willing to pay a license fee per disc? CSS key sets are licensed by the DVD Copy Control Association to manufacturers who incorporate them into their discs during the pressing process. CSS keys can only be added to discs replicated from the glass master. The keys are stored on the lead-in area of the discs, on tracks that are not even recordable on DVD-Rs/DVD+Rs. Even if they were, the firmware of normal DVD writers sold for home use is restricted from writing information to those tracks.

Unless you developed your own brand new format of optical drives, there are no other ways to protect your information from copying. The only one way is to make a loader for your videos which would check if password provided by user matches some schema in your loader.

I create the movie/video file and when I go to "share" the project, the only option given is "Blu-Ray/AVCHD". So I "share" to a project file on the desktop and it plays wonderfully via QuickTime, but when I burn that file to Blu-Ray DVD on an external burner, the result is not playable on the TV via a Blu-Ray player. The player says it is a "data" disk, not video. Where did I go wrong?

You can also do a Google search for "blu-ray creator for mac" and get a number of options. Some have demo versions which you can try. They will probably put a watermark on the output but you can test it so see how easy it is or not.

iMAC is a 2022, model iMAC 21. Blu-Ray burner is a ASUS BW-16D1X-U. Pic 1 shows where my iMAC recognizes the burner. Pic 2 shows the cable connected to burner. Pic 3 shows the cable end and burner receptacle. Pic 4 shows where the cable connects to the USB/Apple adapter. Hope this helps, Kurt:-)

Disks for domestic players have to be 'authored', that is converted to a format that the player recognises. Just dragging a file to the disk and burning it doesn't do that. YOU'll need an app like Toast to create that disk
