Next Sunday, October 21st we have another visit to the Mediterranean lined up, as we head for Ibiza Airport (LEIB) in the Balearic Islands of Spain. In the summer holiday season this single-runway airport is typically quite busy due to Ibiza's well-known popularity as a vacation spot, but now in the off-season traffic is significantly lower. For noise abatement reasons, runway 24 is preferred, but wind conditions due to stormy weather forecasted for this weekend may of course affect this. For custom scenery, there are two options: either the freeware package linked below, or this payware package by PilotPlus.

I had been flying around during the week and set off from the place I last landed, Gatwick Airport, EGKK, once my least favourite airport in real life, but it has improved, especially if you are flying Easy Jet as they have their own terminal, check in area etc etc. Plus you get to cross the taxi way via the air bridge to get to the gates, and look down on planes going beneath.

I planned my route using Simbrief as usual and Kumi seemed to pick some of the same airways as we met up around fix NARAK over the South of France. Never accidentally bumped into another flyer so close (figuratively speaking of course ?

Landed OK stopped fairly quickly as the fuel planning actually worked and the plane was quite light for a nice change to my usual attempts. The IXEGH 737-300 is very nice to fly, has lots of things to keep your interest but is in need of a bit of an update to implement some promised features, like doors.

I am probably the last one with a PIREP for the flight to Ibiza. Since I found my 7-year old smartphones battery dying last weekend I have spent most of my free time hunting the web for a suitable medium size replacement which I still havent found yet - it seems the medium to high end devices now all have the size of a wooden breakfast plate.

In Europe, there will be flights to Bordeaux in France and Rzeszow in southeast Poland again. For the first time, the airline will also fly to Oviedo, the capital of the Asturias region in northern Spain. In addition to the new destinations, Lufthansa is now offering almost all routes that it used to fly before the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, Air China is planning to start flights to the two metropolises Shanghai and Beijing this summer. While Lufthansa will be offering more frequent flights to Tokyo, the Star Alliance partner All Nippon Airways (ANA) is also returning to Munich after a three-year break. Starting from March 27, there will be three flights a week to the Japanese capital.

Easyjet is also starting a new route from Munich. From June 28, the airline will fly to and from Naples up to three times a week. On June 27, Croatia Airlines will start offering its sixth destination from Munich. The new location is the popular holiday island Brac in Croatia.

On Friday afternoon, 218 passengers flew with Lufthansa from Munich to Seattle for the first time. The airline is now offering three weekly flights from Munich to the US metropolis on the Pacific using the most sustainable long-haul aircraft, an Airbus A350. This makes Seattle its fifth destination on North America's West Coast after San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vancouver.

Lufthansa Cargo is expanding its operations at the southern German hub and will be operating freighters from the hub for the first time from 6 July 2024. An A321 freighter will connect Munich with Istanbul Airport twice a week, complementing the existing belly network from Munich. The new freighter connection is planned every Saturday and Sunday with flight numbers LH8350 / LH8351 and LH8346 / LH8347. Lufthansa Cargo customers can book their shipments on the new route with immediate effect.

Thanks to significant passenger growth of 17 percent, Munich Airport (FMG) recorded a positive annual result (EAT) of EUR 25 million for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic. Revenue increased to approximately EUR 1.4 billion. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) moved back into the positive range for the first time since 2019 at EUR 115 million.

Munich Airport continued its recovery in first quarter of 2023, with around seven million passengers counted between January and March. This was 70% more than in the same period of the previous year. Due to the restrictions on international travel as a result of the pandemic, only a little over four million passengers had used Munich Airport for a flight in the first quarter of 2021.

The ongoing positive development at Munich Airport is clearly reflected in the traffic figures for 2023. Passenger numbers rose by five million year-on-year to a total of 37 million. With its current passenger volume, Munich Airport has reached around 80% of the record level from the pre-crisis year 2019. The number of aircraft movements rose by six percent compared to 2022 to more than 300,000 take-offs and landings. The seat load factor reached a record level of 81.3 percent, thereby exceeding 80 percent for the first time since the airport opened.

For the first time, an aircraft of the Moldovan airline FlyOne landed in the Bavarian capital. Every Wednesday and Saturday, FlyOne now connects Munich with the Moldovan capital Chisinau. The flights are operated by Airbus A320 aircraft.

EasyJet is now connecting a new destination with Munich. From June 28, the low-cost airline is serving Naples three times a week, satisfying the high demand from Munich's catchment area for flights to the popular vacation region. With flights to the region around the Amalfi Coast and the offshore islands of Capri and Ischia, the airline has added another route to its established flights from Munich to London-Gatwick, Manchester and Edingburgh

Japan's largest airline ANA and member of the Star Alliance, is returning to Munich Airport after a pandemic-related break. With the start of the summer flight schedule, the 5-star airline is thus resuming its nonstop connection from Munich to Tokyo's city-near Haneda Airport.

In the course of the wage disputes in the public service sector, the trade union ver.di is again calling on employees at Munich Airport to take part in a warning strike. Due to all-day strikes, there will be no regular passenger and cargo traffic at Munich Airport on Sunday, March 26, and Monday, March 27, 2023.

The summer flight schedule will begin on Sunday, March 26, 2023, and end on Saturday, October 28. Munich Airport is offering many new destinations again this summer, as well as a new airline. Lufthansa, the biggest airline at Munich Airport, will start operating additional flight connections.

With the increase of its cargo service between Munich and Doha from two to four weekly flights, Qatar Airways is doubling its capacity. All flights are operated on behalf of the logistics company DB Schenker.

Flughafen Mnchen GmbH (FMG) and Lufthansa are reaffirming and strengthening their successful strategic partnership. The two companies are now signing a letter of intent (LOI) to intensify and continue the sustainable development of Munich Airport.

Munich Airport remains on course for growth in the first quarter of 2024: almost eight million travelers were counted from January to March - despite the numerous strikes. Compared to the same period last year, this represents an increase of about one million passengers, or about 14%.With the current passenger volume, Munich Airport has again reached 80 percent of the record volume from the pre-crisis year 2019, and even 86 percent in international traffic.

In the first three months of this year, almost 68,300 take-offs and landings were registered, an increase of around ten percent compared to the previous year. The continued strong demand for air travel led to another record seat occupancy rate. This rose from 76% in the first quarter of 2023 to 77.6% - in comparison: in the same period in 2019, the aircraft load factor was 71.3%.

Cargo handling also continued to increase significantly: the total volume of air freight and air mail grew by almost ten percent to around 73,500 tons. Overall, the volume of cargo in Munich is now back to almost 90 percent of the pre-corona level.
