It isn't very often that I'm completely split over a movie, but Hancock has managed to put me in that exact position. Usually a film is just good, just bad or average with good and bad scenes mixed together throughout the movie. What completely separates Hancock from other movies is that the first half is great and quite enjoyable; I liked just about every part. Then it passes the midway point and goes crashing down into a muddled, confusing and illogical mess. I can't think of the last movie that I could literally split down the middle and really enjoy one part while totally hating the other. Not exactly the 4th of July weekend movie I was hoping for.

John Hancock (Will Smith) is a depressed, drunk and irresponsible superhero living in Los Angeles who has amnesia. Protecting the city and its inhabitants from evil doers isn't exactly his top priority. Even when he is trying to do good, he ends up destroying property and endangering the same people he is supposed to protect. Although he brings many criminals to justice, the citizens of Los Angeles call him a menace to the city. Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) sees something in Hancock and offers his services in public relations to try and clean up Hancock's image. In the process, and with the help of Ray and his wife Mary (Charlize Theron), Hancock ends up learning who he is and why he acts the way he does.

I hope that plot summary doesn't give away anything, but it exactly sums up what happens. Basically it starts with a great concept and something we haven't seen before in a superhero movie character besides maybe Wolverine. Hancock is Wolverine without the "cool" factor and a thousand times more selfish. Then Ray Embrey gets a hold of him and starts turning him around. He cleans him up, teaches him what people expect from him, and even creates an outfit for him to wear. Then you see the new and improved Hancock in action and it was really cool! The whole idea of a strung-out superhero going through rehab captured my attention and had my excitement building for the first 45 minutes. Why is he so hard on himself? Why doesn't he care? How did he get his powers? These are the questions I was asking in my head and I was truly excited to get the answers.

Then the second half started and it all came crashing down. From there on out there was nothing I liked. I got the answers to my questions, but not the ones I would have expected or wanted to hear. The answers come out of left field and are completely ridiculous, even for a superhero movie. The first section of the last half is like watching Hancock talk through his problems with a shrink. Doesn't exactly sound exciting and surprise - it's not. The second section of the last half is completely illogical. There is a long, drawn-out scene with Hancock in the hospital where he goes in and out of having his powers. Supposedly, this has to do with his proximity to someone else in the hospital but doesn't make sense because he never had problems with his powers any other time he was around that person. You can try and argue that losing his powers was a slow process, but as soon as he starts running away he gains them back. There also was never a villain throughout it all! It was a movie with no climax and no reasoning other than to make us watch as Hancock sorts through his personal issues.

In spite of the story, the cast did a pretty good job. I'm already a Will Smith fan and this didn't hurt my appreciation for what he can bring to a movie. He has that unique ability to play funny and light hearted and switch it into serious and heartfelt in a moment's notice. Jason Bateman was great as well! He was perfect for the role of a guy wanting to honestly change the world. I love him in everything and can't wait for an Arrested Development movie. I have to admit that when I first saw Charlize Theron in 2 Days in the Valley, I didn't ever expect to see her again. She was good in Hancock, but nothing extraordinary.

As much as I enjoyed the first half of the film, the second half completely destroyed the experience I had at the beginning. I would like to say that I could only recommend seeing this after it comes out on DVD, but I know that a lot of people will enjoy it in theaters anyway. They will be able to get past the major flaws and ridiculousness of the second half. Not to mention, it's basically the only film getting released this 4th of July weekend, besides Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, which I know nothing about. Hancock is a mess of a film and definitely the worst 4th of July release since Wild Wild West.

Like a timid giant, popularity rules big-time at the box office. I remember interviewing John Wayne in his home in Newport Beach, Calif. and being shocked at how much he was concerned with Photoplay magazine's top actors list and whether he was going to be on top of the popularity list.

A few actors such as Clint Eastwood, marry substance and popularity. But very few. Most actors' egos lead them to slum in the box office. I'm reminded of this often when a major, talented actor opts for popularity instead of substance when the latter beckons. A recent example is Will Smith in Hancock.

The first half of Hancock is human and smart with a clever premise and some deft execution. But about halfway through, Hancock loses its nerve and becomes gimmicky, sloppy nonsense. Instead of one very good movie, Hancock splits in half and becomes a mess. But it will be a popular mess. Will Smith is an immensely popular actor internationally. When it opened, Hancock was #1 in 47 countries.

I wish Hancock were a better movie; it could have been and should have been. Hancock is a marketing tool. It's full of product placement, and there were about ten previews of other movies being hawked before the feature. If they have people in the seats, why not?

Will Smith is a brash, engaging, cocky actor, but he shows little courage in the movies he chooses to carry. I thought he had used up the kitchen sink in Bad Boys 2, but in Hancock the kitchen sink once again keeps flying across the screen.

The first half of Hancock stresses the human condition. This is evocatively expressed by the three likable main actors: Smith (Hancock), Jason Bateman (Ray Emery) and Charlize Theron (Ray's wife Mary). The Emerys' son Aaron also is humanized by young actor Jae Head.

When Hancock saves the life of Ray, the grateful PR man insists that he will help Hancock create a new positive image. Jason Bateman is the one actor who retains his humanity throughout the movie. That is why he has gotten so much favorable critical attention. The one human being in a movie that careens into cartoonishness becomes particularly memorable.

The scripts for Will Smith's movies usually are dumbed down. Bad Boys 2 may have set the record for f-bombs. The screenplay for Hancock has a rectal fixation. "I'll break my foot in your ass, woman," is one of the lyrical lines Hancock delivers to an old woman in a bar.

Hancock definitely sets the record for use of the word "a-hole." I lost count after 600. But despite the lower case language, the first half of Hancock is blessedly bright. Then Will Smith, et al. lose faith in their audience. Substantial humanity is jettisoned, and cartoon antics abound.

I think I may have to watch this film again because I can't really remember the plot. Maybe they just thought enough is enough and they wanted to die of old age. Most of the time Hancock was the problem instead of the hero. Also there is always something that pulls them apart, right? maybe they thought they were not meant for each other.

I knew that, but what i'm saying is that their both immortal so eventually ray will die of old age and they will still be standing so will they get back together when ray dies? what about rays son? etc

I just presumed Ray would die, and then Hancock and the women would get together and die. That's how they were the only two left when they are close to each other they will gradually become mortal, therefore age.

I dont think they would get together, they seem to hate each other too much. And ofcource he will die and so will the son. Im sure she will end up leaving the town anyway, since people will begin to notice her not aging.

I agree but they are making a hancock 2, if you go onto internet movie data base and look up will smith you will see it there along side independence day 2&3 and men in black 3 cant wait for these !!

I'm one of the people that didn't like Hancock, it was a nice twist on the Superhero genre. The twist you could see coming from a mile away via trailer. Yea you knew she had superpowers but that they were together for 3000 years? No that was just silly in the first place. Lemme guess Hankcock 2.

I watched that movie like a year ago but didn't really like it so can't really remember the plot. All I remember is that the plot was stupid and made me fall asleep (and I never fall asleep while watching movies). So I would never spend money on Hancock 2.

It was a good film, but I don't think a sequal is justified, but that's Hollywood/Money for you... The best thing about the film was Hancock being an ass and rude etc at the start of the film. It was a breath of fresh air and originality from other superhero movies.

As to Gareth Dent's question of will they get back together ... I seriously doubt it. When they're together they become vulnerable and it's always Hancock that seems to come off worse because people use her to get to him, which is why she left him in the first place.

There has been sum talk recently in the forums if Hancock should be Rated R or not. While Will's character in Hancock naturally lends itself to a more mature rating, the film has been publicized as more of a fun PG-13 type movie. (Trailer/Poster)

And personally I know that if the movie is rated R, I won't be seeing it. And thats the same for my family and close friends. So an R rating is something that can have a great impact on how a movie is perceived as well as it total income. Movie studios know that Will Smith is a major box office draw. While I'm not saying that the movie won't make a huge amount of money, the studios know that they can get EVEN MORE with a PG-13 Rating.
