It also takes controls from the monitor itself (including built-in ones), so if your device came pre-installed with Windows 11 or the monitor is able to give commands to the OS, then the built-in sensors will change the brightness as needed - much like on smartphones.
Most of the laptops I've owned have been fine, however several Windows versions (including Windows 10) have had this occasional bug where the brightness controls will stop working when I wake the computer up from sleep. This results in the Brightness button in the Windows Tray not doing anything when clicked.
I tried restarting the DisplayEnhancementService as suggested in another answer. It didn't help. I also tried restarting the graphics driver with Win+Ctrl+Shift+B. This didn't work either, but it's a good thing to try when your screen isn't turning on.
Start Device Manager (I use Win+X M). Select "Show devices by type" in the View menu, and then find your device under "Monitors". On a laptop with no external displays attached, there should be only one. With the device selected, click the "disable device" button in the menu bar, and confirm in the popup dialog. This did not turn my display off when I tried it, but it flickered. Then enable the device again with the button. My brightness controls worked again at this point.
but for your scenario, I suspect that display driver has something wrong, when PC awaken from sleep, system will re-load graphic adapter driver, if there is any issue occurred in this process, screen display will show some problems, such as brightness control not working problem.
This is something I like to do manually several times a day as I have sensitive eyes! I used to be able to access it quickly via the bottom right hand corner of my screen. With Windows 11, it seems the only way is to go into start menu>settings>system>display>brightness....
Five clicks is fine, I'm not impatient, but that feels like an awful lot of visually navigating around the screen trying to read stuff, exactly at the moment when your the brightness is not working well for your eyes! Surely there is some new shortcut I'm missing?
now .. i really have no idea what to do, with all this attepemts and still can't get rid of it, i start losing hope i can use my laptop without the screen changing brighness on its own, watching a movie and browsing the web with the screen flickers to adapte to the background, its a terrible situation, i just can't see why HP or other gpu manufacturesee this as solution to anything, its just a continuous headache that i can't get rid of
I would like to assist you with the issue of Auto Brightness on your computer running Windows 8. Would you be able to change the "Power Plan" to High Performance and let me know if this resolves the issue? -is/windows-8/power-plans-faq
as you're in HP sir, i like to ask you, does HP has any software (like in Sony laptops or other laptops) that is hidden and could possibly be the responsible for the auto-brightness, i looked for all the HP software pre-installed in my laptop and couldn't find any that is related to screen or brightness,
one thing about the brightness problem i forget to mention before, it seems it kicks in when i turn on my laptop when it was turned off, i have to restart again to get rid of it .. not really sure why, but that's what i noticed. (its also kicks in when i use the battry i guess)
Hi gingerbiscuitma, I have found a link that is a NONE HP supported site but it does give step by step instructions on how to disable the Auto Brightness settings in windows 8. Please click on the link that I have provided and follow the on line instructions. -to/tutorial-how-to-disable-auto-brightness-in-windows-8.xhtml
I know this is to late and you may have solved your problem. This is for those who still have this problem. If you got an integrated Intel HD GPU, look for the Intel HD Graphics Driver. If installed, uninstall it. This driver have something called gamma correction that wont be disabled (I could not figure it out)
The Native Windows 8 display driver are capable of running desktop graphics just fine without this driver. NOTE: this is only an option if you have a dedicated GPU besides the integrated GPU.
Depending on how bright or dark the content of my Photoshop file is, my screen (laptop running Windows 10) will get brighter or darker. This is especially noticeable when I zoom in or out on an image. Never had this before on previous laptops.
I have a new Dell XPS with Windows 10 pro. It is so annoying, I disabled the Windows auto brightness adjust but it keeps changing. For me it is most noticable if I am zoomed out and I just move my mouse outside my workspaces.

Is your PC monitor too bright or too dim? You can easily adjust the screen brightness of your Windows 10 computer in the Settings menu. You can also change the screen brightness in the action center in the taskbar. This wikiHow guide will show you how to adjust the screen brightness in Windows 10.
I recently installed the Windows 10 Preview via Bootcamp on both my 2012 iMac and 2012 MBP both with Yosemite. Both installations went fine except for the MBP's screen brightness. It will only go to about 75% brightness even though it says 100% leaving me with a pretty dim screen. The bootcamp drivers seem to be working fine because I can adjust it both up and down, it just won't get as bright as it should. If any more information is needed please let me know and I will post that info. I really need this problem fixed.
I hope this helps. If anyone is having problems with Windows 10 bootcamp, I would strongly recommend installing the most up-to-date bootcamp drivers. I lost my F-key functionality after the upgrade, and reinstalling the updated drivers resolved that issue.
I am facing same issue the brightness bar goes up and down but there is no visible change in the brightness. I have tried disbling the adaptive brightness and automatic brightness settings but still it doesn't seem to work.
Summary: Microsoft Scripting Guy, Ed Wilson, talks about using Windows PowerShell to report and set monitor brightness.Microsoft Scripting Guy, Ed Wilson, is here. Today I was exploring the Root/WMI namespace in Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) on my Windows 8 laptop. I happened to run across a few WMI classes that I had not messed around with before. I like to use the Get-CimClass cmdlet from Windows PowerShell 3.0 for this kind of explorations because it supports tab completion and other features that make this exploration easy.
So I was initially looking for anything related to monitors. And as I looked at what scrolled by, I saw that there were classes related to monitor brightness. So I decided to modify my query a bit to include things related to monitor brightness. I derived the following command, and achieved the results shown here:
To set the brightness on my laptop display monitor, I figure I can use the WmiMonitorBrightNessMethods WMI class. While I have MSDN open, I check out WmiMonitorBrightnessMethods class, and it appears that I will be able to use it to set my monitor brightness:
I have a problem with reversed brightness on my HP 250 G3 with Intel N3540 running Windows 10 x64 Home. The hardware brightness buttons as well as the system's one are reversed. Only after restart everything goes back to normal but only till the next shut down and start of the machine.
Driver installed through Intel Driver Update Utility is signed 10.18.10.4276 but it doesn't work, as well as the one that can be found on HP's site which is signed as 4252. The only one working properly in terms of brightness is the old one 3408. The newer one 3431 won't even install, it says that the system isn't compatible (although this drivers is newer that the one running right now).
None of these drivers can be found on Intel's site and Intel Driver Update Utility can't even fit right into the screen. There is also no Intel's official graphics identifier and the system always gives only the common label "Intel HD Graphics". Even asking question on this forum has been complicated to a maximum. I didn't know if I'm asking question or writing a topic to a discussion. And I thought HP's web page is messy, but Intel beats it all! These are really big hiccups.
Thank you for your feedback, please bear in mind that Intel recommends installing customized drivers from the computer manufacturer since their drivers will have all proper feature to work with your computer model.
Installed the driver in link, didn't solve the problem perfectly. Every time I shut my computer down and start it. the problem reappears, needs a restart every time to fix. But can't see the advantage of less boot time if I have to restart whenever I switch it on. Oh, and the restart fix was working even before installing the driver you linked. Same was the problem in 8.1 single language(not my pre-installed). My laptop was pre-installed with win 8.1 single language with bing. Tried installing about 5-7 win 10 drivers from hp and intel website, none solved the problem completely. I don't have recovery on me now. Is their no other way to fix this except to use recovery?
