Asian American/Pacific Islander:
Ching Chong Chinaman by
Lauren Yee
A contemporary satire on Asian-American identity.
The play follows the Wong family, an ultra-assimilated Chinese-American
family dealing with personal, cultural, and political problems.
Desdemona, the daughter, is desperate
to get into Princeton University. Upton, the son, is a serious
gamer trying to go to the international World of Warcraft tournament.
Ed, the father, is doing his best to please his family, foster his marriage,
and deal with male inadequacies. Grace, the mother, yearns for
validation as a mother and as a person. J, Upton's indentured
servant, flies from China to the U.S. in hopes of landing a dance contract.
All of them struggle to understand their identity amongst a convoluted,
complex American Dream.
African American:
Killa Dilla by OyamO
Killa Dilla is a dark and twisted
tale of LaBarsha, a torn black woman battling with reality and her stunted
past. By day she wears the mask of content but behind closed doors
she battles her terrible secret. Only by the foggy guidance of
her friends does LaBarsha come to terms with this life and the next.
Chicano/a & Latino/a:
La SonaDora by Fernanda
Coppel
Pamela, a nine-year old presumably
with autism, begins to ask her grandmother questions about holding cells,
her unknown father, her conception, and even momma's bad temper after
a ghost from her mother's past visits her to get her sweater back.
Generations of secrets held in the wombs of women begin to spill out
as Pamela's tenth birthday approaches. Her need to know the truth
can no longer be tamed, because this generation of women will ask the
questions.
5th Element:
The Underground by Edy
McWilliams
The Underground is a journey into
the subway culture in New York City. This play illustrates the
characteristics, stories and experiences of the people we see on public
transportation everyday through the lens of hip hop culture. In short
The Underground delves deeper into the everyday unseen.
Poets Corner
This is a space for writers, artists,
and dancers alike. The goal of Poets' is to have students perform
their own spoken word poetry and express their own stories on stage.
It is a collaborative effort to address those stories that are hidden.
