Wondering whether the scrambling of my own Kindle happened for the same reason

I think such cases are sporadic. Amazon would have mentioned it on their website if such incidents occur on a regular basis. (However, strong magnetic fields can damage the circuitry of most gadgets. Not sure if the x-ray
machines generate magnetic fields.)

As a precaution, I wrap my kindle in a bubble cover, despite having a leather jacket. Not that it minimizes the x-ray damage. Atleast the cover cushions the unit when the airport personnel toss my baggage around.

My Kindle Keyboard 3G just went through the Bombay, Atlanta and Paris airports without a hitch.

I'd agree with harish here. These cases are sporadic at best.
