Dear residents/ registrars,

These are good resources. Use them while you are at home for a week. Don't let Covid stop your learning.

Thanks & Regards

A message from our CPD director, Simon Carley

This year is going to be a challenge for us all. Already departments in London and across the country are feeling the strain of Covid-19 and it may yet get worse. As a college we have recognised the importance of the clinical services and as such we have postponed or cancelled all of our face to face CPD events for months to come. However, we can’t let CPD disappear, and we might even argue that it is more important than ever to keep up to date and to remember that we need to still develop a broad range of skills to be effective clinicians.

Our Spring CPD conference was of course cancelled, but as a result we have an opportunity to use some of the learning materials we prepared for this as a regular CPD bulletin. Our brief for 2020 was to provide commentaries and links for each session in Bournemouth that delegates could take away to further their learning and to act as reminders of the content. As we no longer have a conference, we intend to use these, together with some contributions from some of our postponed study days to give you a regular CPD topic.

Our topics are organised with links to RCEM learning modules and we invite you to use these to keep your CPD going and to reflect on your learning in the usual way (ideally using our CPD app of course). We have also highlighted those individuals who have contributed to the CPD content, the conference and the modules. Just click on the links embedded within our infographics and keep learning. We will also package these CPD bulletins with additional content from the college during this challenging time.

Finally, we will get through this and the CPD team will return to normal at some point (hopefully) soon. We were gutted not to get everyone together in Bournemouth and the postponement of the study days around the country are clearly a missed opportunity for many who put a huge amount of work into making them happen. Do not despair though, we will be back with bigger and better ideas. Until then…. Wash your hands 😉

Spring CPD conference theme: Pre-hospital Care

How can we gain a better understanding of the complexities of working in the prehospital environment? How can we develop our appreciation of the patient's perspective?  What are the alternative treatments to be considered in resistant ventricular fibrillation? How do we deal with cardiac arrest in pregnancy? To find out, download our e-learning document with links to podcasts, SAQs, learning modules and blog posts.

CPD Podcast - Dr Katherine Henderson discusses COVID-19

Katherine Henderson, President of RCEM, chats to Simon Carley about COVID-19 in the first episode of the CPD podcast series.

Katherine and Simon discuss the importance of feeling part of a national team and communication during this current crisis. She speaks of the importance of supporting staff, how we're going to prevent burnout, correct PPE usage and much more. Listen now on the RCEM Learning website.

Wellbeing during COVID-19

"All epidemics have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Together we can support each other and reach the other side of this."

This is an unprecedented situation that none of us have previously had to contend with. We must remember that all of us, however junior or senior, may be feeling out of our depth, which is an entirely normal and reasonable response. Dr Linda Dykes has created an online resource with wellbeing advice to support all healthcare workers during this pandemic.

At this time of crisis our RCEM employees job is to help those who help the sick. We’ll do our best for you. If Members and Fellows have any needs we can help with do contact us as usual.
