Hi All,

I am just starting out with bat detecting and my new Echo Meter Touch 2 just arrived last week.  I haven't been able to locate many resources for local bats but have the Churchill book.  I have been spotlighting for mammals for a while but keen to try and ID some of the bats I often see in the lights.

I made my first recording last week which I think was a bat.  Its not great but its my first and only so far.

I have put the recording into Kaleidoscope and think I can see frequencies from 28 - approx 38KHz with some spikes into the 40s?    Is this likely to make it the South-western Freetail Bat Mormopterus planiceps or in the Churchill book Mormopterus species 4 undescribed?  I think its the same.

I have attached the wav file and screen shots below.

Would love some guidance in where I might find some more resources and start to learn more.  Thanks in advance.

Cheers Ry

Hi Ry,

I will leave the ID to the WA experts, except to say that the Mormopterus species have all been revised by Terry Reardon and it's probably worth checking out the revised species to see what Morm sp. 4 is now (it may be more than one, I don't have the paper with me). I'm sure someone will have an electronic copy with them that they could forward you.

Best of luck with your bats!
Julie

Hi Ry

This is Chalinolobus gouldii.

Bats of the southwest are mostly easy to identify most of the time, except for the Nyctophilus, unfortunately. It will be more complex when you get to the edges of the region and into areas where other species could be, eg Scotorepens balstoni. But at least you don't have multiple Vespadelus to confuse things - or do you? When I was last there I was intrigued that regulus from some areas called a bit differently to those in other areas. So you never know. It's a nice fauna to work with, and less confusibles than even Tasmania!

I attach a zc file from your wav which shows that sequence well.

Cheers, Chris.

Thanks Chris

First I am glad it is a bat!!  and really pleased to get an ID.

Do you have any recommendations for a newbie amateur?  It's not fair to be asking here for every ID :)  I have found a few papers that I will read start reading through and I am going to set aside some time to watch the Kaleidoscope tutorial videos.

cheers
Ry

Hi Ry,

Attached a paper that summarises the call characteristics of south-west bats.  Sorry about the quality.

I think people on this list don't mind guessing at some calls every now and then.  All the best.

Best regards,

Kyle
