Hi - It's pretty daunting asking this knowledgeable group this....but here goes....

I have requested a bat detector for my upcoming birthday and would like to hear your recommendations on which one to buy.
I have:
- limited ANABAT & ANALOOK experience
- too much SM2 + Songscope (bird) survey experience (I have no desire to collect >30TB of data again...!)
- a budget of  ~$1000
- 3 small kids who I want to participate (visual and audio output would therefore be good)
-  and I only want one for hobby, not survey, purposes.
- oh, and something that is suited to temperate, SW Western Aust!

Thanks in advance for any input!
Cheers,
Susan.

Hi Susan,

What phone do you have?  Do you have a tablet and what sort (Android, iOS, WIN10)?

Do you trust the kids with your phone/tablet?

Best regards,

Kyle

Hi Susan,

Given your list of requirements a Baton XD might fit (see link below).  Echometer Touch is neat and cheap  but the connection to the tablet or phone not so robust esp for kids. The Baton you can use alone or connected to phone or tablet.

Thanks Kyle and Terry -
I have a Samsung Galaxy (S7) android, and Paul has an iPhone7 which kids are OK to carry around.
No functioning tablets at the moment.
Does this info change what you'd recommend?
Cheers,.
Susan.

Hi Susan,  I saw wildlife acoustics demonstrate the echometer touch 2  recently in the US,  there is a pro and regular version,  apparently the pro has a better mic.  They both looked very good.  Only problem is that you would have to choose one platform,  they have different versions for iph
Ios or android.
Cheers

Hi Susan, the echo metre touch is a good all around crowd pleaser for me. Whether it’s at home, a family bush walk, a field trip, training session, community walk or at the pub it works a treat. I find kids engage way more in it than my anabat and baton. I have never let kids handle it though because the connection is quite delegate! However if you wanted to let kids go wild with it duct tape could work a treat. Alternatively the foam tablet cases can be modified to fit the detector in smuggly and they have great grins for small
HandS. The map function on the app is also very fun. There’s something about a screen and being able to ease drop in on the secret world of bats visually that works a treat! It’s also good because you have have it outside on your deck and use an extension lead to be waiting for the bats to arrive by looking at your phone or tablet every now and again from the comfort of your couch.

Happy shopping
- Lisa

Hi Susan,

I quite like the Pettersson M500-384.  I have it attached to my Android phone/tablet.  Cost is about $500.  Software app is either free (UsbBatDetector) or $8 for Bat Recorder, which I prefer - quite nice display, saves calls to your phone in WAV, triggered recording capability.  Cable can be longer or shorter as you prefer (mini-USB to micro-USB OTG cable).  I always take one when travelling.

Best regards,

Kyle
