Dear fellow Kidical Mass organizers and participants,

As the organizer of Washington DC’s Kidical Mass ride and an occasional rabble-rouser on behalf of family cycling (especially for moms!), I have the very great honor of being invited to speak as a panelist at the National Women’s Bicycling Forum in less than two weeks. Our panel focuses on outreach to minority and underrepresented groups in bicycling—especially African-American communities, low-income populations, and mothers. You can read a full summary of the panel discussion here (scroll down to the 10am breakout sessions).

It’s a real privilege to be able to represent the needs and concerns of bicycling parents at a national event such as this one, and I want to make sure I’m presenting an accurate portrait of Kidical Mass and the family bicycling community. While I’m familiar with my own struggles and with some of the concerns of Washington, DC’s parent- (and especially mom-) biking community, I’d like to respect the different voices of family cyclists around the nation.

I hope some of you can help me out by sharing your stories as family cyclists and/or Kidical Mass organizers. There’s a quick, anonymous Google Docs survey that you can fill out here, or you can e-mail me your thoughts at Kidica...@gmail.com. I’m also happy to talk to you on the phone if you’d like to have a deeper conversation or want to know more about the panel.

It’s been so exciting to watch the groundswell of support and attention for women’s cycling and family cycling over the past few years. I believe that neither utility cycling nor women’s cycling will be truly normalized until we can address the challenge of how to transport kids by bicycle. I hope you can join me in helping the attendees at the National Women’s Bicycling Forum understand this challenge and learn more about what the larger cycling community can do to address it.

Please send your responses or respond to the survey by Friday, February 29. And feel free to forward this message to all the biking moms and dads you know!

My sincerest thanks for your assistance,

Megan Odett
