Join us for a totally free and fun romp through the woods on Black Friday again this year! Yes that means we are closed on the biggest retail day of the year. Frankly, it's never been that great of a day for the local bike shop. So we think the right thing to do is get together with our customers and do what we all want to do, which is ride bikes!! The fine print is below, including a cue sheet that you may want to print out for yourself.
A true backwoods adventure, BFMX is the best way
to un-fatten yourself from the Thanksgiving holiday. Put some meaty
knobby's on your Katy Trail Bike and come ride 33 miles of the sickest
terrain your doughy heinie can handle. It might just kick your ass in
all the right places.
We have laid out a 33-ish mile gravel/fire road/trail ride that starts and ends at the Elbow Inn in beautiful Devil's Elbow. This will give you a rough idea of the route: http://app.strava.com/routes/68281 And for you Garmin connecters: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/10569855
This year we will mark the route and try to be patriotic about it so it
doesn't get messed with. It might be smart to print the ride
description below and pair it with a map. Note that some portions of the ride follow jeep trails that aren't even on most maps.
Leaving the Elbow, we will ride along the banks of the Big Piney on
Temporal road (gravel). After passing under the old train trestle,
you'll climb the biggest hill of the day. At the top, turn left at the first T intersection then left again at the next three-way. This will take you out to HWY J. Go straight across J onto CR7640 (gravel). Bear left at the first 3-way intersection.
Take a left on FR1530 (gravel) and go straight on it til it ends and
splits into a rutted out jeep trail and some other trail. Take the one
to the left. There might be muddy spots. Keep going til the jeep trail merges into CR7620 (gravel) and bear right to descend to AA (pavement).
Go right on AA then turn left into the old Mill Creek Silo area
(gravel). Watch for the eternal puddle...supposedly it's pretty deep in
the middle. Cross the low-water slab then bear right after it, and right
at the next 3-way. Ride past the Silo, go around the gate to the
left, and go straight down to where the old slanted gate used to be. Now
there's just kind of a big gap in the fence. Turn left and start
climbing the old Kaintuck Trail (singletrack-ish) At the top, go
left into a bit of singletrack then look for a slant gate to your right.
Go through it and into the Vessie Widlife Area (grass doubletrack).
Follow the old truck trail through the field all the way out to HWY T
(pavement). You will have to pass through another slant gate. Go left on T for a little over mile, then left on FR1576 (gravel) into Kaintuck Hollow.
Ride thru the Hollow until you cross Mill Creek then go left on CR7550
(gravel) for a few miles, then right on HWY AA (pavement) for your third
big climb of the day. AA will tee into HWY P (pavement) where you will go left, then left on CR7650 (gravel). Right on HWY J (pavement) then quick left onto Dan's Farm Road (CR7660)(gravel). Ride about half a mile on this road.
Right on FR1727 (gravel), go over the RR tracks, then left. At
subsequent 3-way intersections, bear to the right. Follow this til it
kind of dead-ends and then off to the right it turns into a 4-wheeler
trail through a cool pine forest. You will cross a pipeline clearcut.
THE NEXT 1/4 MILE WILL CROSS PRIVATE PROPERTY. WE HAVE PERMISSION SO
IT'S COOL. JUST DON'T STOP FOR A GRUMPY DUMPY IN THE WOODS OR ANYTHING. This will eventually merge with Teasley Lane (gravel), which connects you to old 66 (or HWY Z)(pavement). Watch for traffic, hang a left then another left to get back to the Elbow Inn!!
Apres-ride, mosey on in to the Elbow Inn for some deeeelicious smoked wings or brisket. Mmmmmmmm brisket....drool. We checked, and yes they will be open that day. And they are quite friendly to anyone on two wheels, motorized or not.
We would recommend anything but a road bike for this ride. CX,
Mountain, Hybrid, Dual Sport, Touring, Monstercross, Katy Trail Bikes,
and Frankenbikes all welcome. Kickstands up at 10:00 am ! Not 'get there at 10 and make everyone wait for you to get ready'.
Directions from Rolla: I-44 W to HWY J exit Left, then right on HWY Z for about 3 miles. Look for Elbow Inn sign on your left and turn there.
Everyone is invited ! The More the Merrier !!
