Don't know wether I am doing the right thing here, but I have always
found Yahoo groups to be a bit of a pain.

As the Yahoo group has apparently been down for a couple of days, I
thought I would set up an alternative group on google.

The original Kicad group is not down. I think it is just that folk are
on holiday so it is bound to be quiet.

Except that it is apparently impossible to post. You say it is bound to
be quit? Well, maybe, but I have not been able to post, nobody else has
posted, but several new members have joined, leaving no posts.

I have known this to happen often on Yahoo groups.

No it is not impossible to post. New members join all the time but they
do not post when they join. Most just lurk for a while. All new members
posts are moderated when they first join in order to prevent spam. This
can cause a delay in their first posts appearing but provided they are
legitimate they are let through. Members with strange user names tend
to be moderated for longer.

I suggest you try posting again.

I have been getting this message since Saturday:

<quite yahoo>
We're sorry, but we were unable to complete your request at this time.

If you continue to receive this error for more than 48 hours, please
contact our Customer Care team. We apologize for this inconvenience.

Yes, I have got in contact with the customer care team, got the
standard reply, and replied with details as requested. But it has had
no more effect than it has had on other occasions with other groups.

I am aware that new users get moderated (allthougth I joined the group
6 months ago I only made 1 post). As for my user name, after half an
hour of trying to get a decent username and being plastered with
suggestions with numbers in it, that is what came out ;-) I believe
Yahoo have no rectified this problem which happened some time ago, auto
regeristing bots ate up all the imaginable names and hence they
introduced the graphic device.

BTW, spammers and trolls usually avoid strange user names.

I have nothing particular aginst Yahoo groups, I like thier group sites
better than Google and it would appear that Google are trying to play
catch up with Yahoo in thier new (beta) groups service. The trouble is
that these problems exist, here and in other groups. And if you cannot
post you are isolated. As Ghandi put it, you cannot have a community
without a means of communication. Forums are particularly important for
OSS, it is the only way you can reach out for help.

In the past I have played with KiCAD, but now I have decided to try it
out with a serious project. This is a big personel risk for me but real
projects are the only way software can get really tested. Finding out
that I am isolated from the KiCAD community came as quite a shock. I
searched around and found that there are numerous communities out
there, but only the Yahoo group for english users.

Hence I created the **Alt** KiCAD group. The emphasis is on the Alt. I
would prefer to use the common Yahoo group if possibile, but as I know
from experience that this is often impossibile then I will sure as hell
try and make some sort of alternative arrangement.

If KiCAD is to be used for serious projects, you cannot expect users to
depend on a single unreliable forum as the only source of help or
contact from fellow users.

I just posted a test message and it went straight through. Seems like
you have a problem with your membership with yahoo. How are you posting
- via email or on the web?

Kicad is already used for serious projects. The yahoo group is the only
english group for its users but you are the first person to report
posting difficulties. The group was set up by users for usera and is
not the responsibility of Kicad's creators. The advantage of a web
based group is we can eliminate spam. We have been asked to set up a
standard news group for Kicad - would that be a better alternative
posting site for you? - but remember it would have no spam controls at
all.

Possibly I am the only person who has problems with Yahoo, but I doubt
it. I know from past experience that others have the same problem, as
people also have problems with google and xxx forum.

BTW, I post by web, and it has been suggested that this may be part of
the problem. Yahoo track where users are logging in from and users like
me who regularly use different computers on different domains (home + 2
different offices) tend to have problems. Maybe there is a bug in the
system.

But like I said, I have tried taking up the issue with customer
services.

In fact I would agree with those who suggest a newsgroup. My experience
is that spammers generally do not abuse them, or that or the news
servers are good at blocking them. Browse througth technical newsgroups
and you will see there is not much spam. Biggest problem is trollers,
but you learn to live with them. The biggest problem is getting the
newbies to stop feeding them, if they get 0 replies they soon go away.
Worst thing is to tell them to go away, or argue with them, that is
what they want.

The great thing about newsgroups is they are resiliant, the news always
gets througth. If one news server is down, use another. I use google
for browsing usenet, has it's snags but at least there is always an up
to date list wherever you log in from, and your HD does not get blocked
with trash.

You are never alone with newsnet.

Oh, just a note. Youu say it is quite normal for new users to join the
group and not post anything.

Has it ever occured to you that users who get problems just give up and
never come back?

I know this has happened on the LPC2000 group, I was using another
forum for this chip and a newbie posted a message saying he had tries
the Yahoo group and given up, many others replied that they had given
up trying to use the Yahoo group. I occasionaly post there but
sometimes ther is just no way.

Well I would not want to lose a keen Kicad user and I agree about news
- the trolls are a PITA - so I will set the wheels in motion.

I saw your test message, and so I tried posting a reply. It got
accepted. Inspired, I tried the post that I have been trying to send
for days.....reffered to customer services as usual.

So far the reply to your test has not shown up either, despite being
"accepted".
