Can our work lead to solving Bengaluru’s water crisis?

Today, we're reaching out to you with an urgent appeal that requires your immediate attention and action. We need your support – and here is why it matters.

It is no secret that our cities are grappling with many recurring and newer challenges - from traffic jams to air pollution, lack of public safety to precarity of urban livelihoods. Each complex and multifaceted in its own way.

However, these problems are not insurmountable. Collective action can make our cities better. All that's needed to make that possible is a shared understanding of these issues, and a shared vision on how to overcome them.

That’s where our work at Citizen Matters, Open City and the various workshops helps make a difference.

  • Our stories by the Citizen Matters team create awareness around systemic issues and harsh realities on the ground.
  • Public urban data made accessible by Open City and the datajams hosted by the team lend credence and provide a firm basis for the action that needs to be taken.
  • And master classes, workshops and expert-led sessions help citizens understand exactly what to do, and how, to bring about meaningful change.

Just one example, take Bengaluru's current water crisis.

Citizen Matters has published hundreds of articles covering water-related topics including insightful case studies and solutions. They empower citizens with information, create awareness and shape narratives.

Open City surveyed and published water tanker rates in January that helped RWAs spot the trend on water availability and supply-demand dynamics. The February Datajam saw experts, data analysts and urban planners dissect various water scenarios using data. At a webinar on Tue, 12th March, the teams presented their findings to both the public and officials.

And much before the crisis came into news, our Masterclass on lakes explained the importance of these water bodies and resulted in a dozen lakes being audited by local volunteers with data shared publicly on Open City.

Thus we enable in-depth understanding of problems and possible solutions on issues that affect all of us every day. Our foremost objective: To develop a critical mass of informed citizens, who are equipped to engage in collective problem solving.

Help us continue our work towards that goal.
