Orcas sleep in a very different way to humans. We have a breathing reflex and when we sleep or become unconscious, we continue to breath automatically. Orcas cannot sleep in this way, they have to remain conscious, even when they are sleeping! This is because their breathing is not automatic - they have to actively decide when to breath, and so they must be conscious even when sleeping. If like us, orcas went into a deep unconscious sleep, they would stop breathing and suffocate or drown.
To get around this, orcas only allow one half of their brains to sleep at a time; the other half stays alert enabling them to continue breathing whilst looking out for dangers in the environment. They only close one eye when they sleep; the left eye will be closed when the right half of the brain sleeps, and vice versa. This type of sleep is known as unihemispheric sleep as only one brain hemisphere sleeps at a time. Orcas periodically alternate which side is sleeping so that they can get the rest they need without ever losing consciousness. When sleeping, orcas swim very slowly and steadily, close to the surface.
Orcas worldwide face a number of threats. They get caught in fishing nets and gear accidentally, face problems with toxic waste and pollution in the sea. Increase in boat traffic can result in collisions with orcas and an increase in underwater noise pollution.
The footage shows Hunchy floating motionless just below the ocean surface after the two younger orcas left the scene. The young pair swam back and forth between Hunchy and a group of orcas further away, Robert de Latour said, repeatedly trying to "activate" the old male.
The young orcas realized that if they left Hunchy, he would sink to his death, he added. (Orcas can stay submerged for up to 15 minutes, but they usually come to the surface to breathe every minute when resting, and every three to five minutes when traveling.)
"To my knowledge, the death of an adult member of the group, and how the other [orcas] behave in that instance when an adult is dying, is something that has not been observed before," Samarra told Live Science in an email.
However, researchers have previously recorded the moments surrounding the death of a calf. "We know that orcas show very specific behaviors when calves die," Samarra said. "They have been observed numerous times carrying them, pushing them to the surface, and this can go on for many days." One incident involving orcas from the southern resident population saw a mother carrying her dead calf for over two weeks, she said.
Whether these really were Hunchy's last moments remains to be confirmed. A second boat that arrived on the scene reportedly witnessed the same struggle unfolding one or two hours later, Robert de Latour said, but the crew couldn't determine if Hunchy managed to swim back up to the surface alone or if the younger orcas hauled him up one last time.
hello im trying to configure a cr10 smart pro that im running klipper on to do m600. To my knowledge i have the macro setup correctly in the .cfg file. i did notice a spot in orca slicer to place filament change code. ive attached a screenshot. Do i need to configure this in anyway? Ive looked through the gcode after slicing and i dont see anything representing the m600 at the layer change. BTW ive very new to klipper and barely starting to understand it so TIA
I have orca install, and it works well on the desktop. How do I make it read a webpage? When I open firefox, orca tells me it is open, but how to read the content using orca?I have caret browsing enables, and can navigate, but nothing is spoken.
Will I see any orcas on this cruise?
While we cannot guarantee whale sightings, our captains visit orca hot spots and communicate with other vessels about recent orca sightings to give our guests the best chances of viewing orcas and other whales. On average, we see orcas on 90% of our Orca Quest Cruises. The longer you are on the water, the greater your chances are of seeing whales. Orcas are most frequently seen in the area from mid-May to mid-June, which is why we run this cruise during that time.
Do not miss out on this tour! My husband and I along with our family had the real pleasure of the Orca tour. This is something not to miss (only running from mid May to mid June) this tour did not disappoint. When booking a wildlife tour you are always unsure whether you will actually see any! The crew of the Orca Song did everything they could to show us wildlife and they did not let us down. On a 4hr tour we saw a hump back whale, orcas, sea lions, porpoise, bald eagle, mountain goat and many birds including puffins. The crew were incredible and made us feel really comfortable and welcome. Do not let this chance go by make sure you visit marine major tours!
