Global Warming and Wildfires

The devastating Colorado wildfires remind us of one of the great dangers posed by climate change. As detailed in the journal Ecosphere, climate change will make wildfires in the West more frequent over the next 30 years. According to the report, almost all of North America and most of Europe will see an increase in wildfires by 2100.

The U.S. Southwest is the fastest-warming region of the United States, and this warming will worsen droughts and increase wildfire risk. The warning signs are there, with recent fire seasons setting records in both the number of reported fires as well as acres burned.

The consequences of global warming on weather patterns are serious, and we all must do our part to reduce C02 emissions. Visit StopGlobalWarming.org for simple actions you can begin today to help.

Rio Wraps

Negotiators from 188 countries wrapped up the three-day Rio+20 environmental summit last week, and the results were disappointing. No significant new agreements were made, and there has been virtually no progress beyond what was signed at the original 1992 Earth Summit.

“We’ve sunk so low in our expectations that reaffirming what we did 20 years ago is now considered a success,” said Martin Khor, a member of the U.N. Committee on Development Policy.

Governments follow the will of the people only when the people make their voices heard. Help become part of the movement to demand our political and business leaders reduce carbon dioxide emissions now.

Court Backs EPA Authority Over Emissions Limits

Last Tuesday, a federal appeals court upheld a finding by the EPA that global warming causing emissions endanger public health.

The three-judge panel also declared that the EPA was “unambiguously correct” that the Clean Air Act requires the government to impose limits once it has determined that emissions are causing harm. The court also approved the White House's first set of clean air and fuel economy standards, paving the way for tougher fuel standards by 2025.

“These rulings clear the way for the EPA to keep moving forward under the Clean Air Act to limit carbon pollution from motor vehicles, new power plants and other big industry sources,” said David Doniger, senior attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Promoting National Service

We are dedicated to the notion that great change comes when citizens take personal action. Often the most valuable donation you can give is your time.

OneMillionNewJobs.org is a campaign of OUR TIME, a national non-profit that promotes empowerment for young Americans, who support the expansion of jobs for youth and national service.

National service jobs allow young Americans to address critical social issues in education, health, housing, economic development, the environment, and disaster relief. These jobs enable qualified Americans to serve the country for up to two years through organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Teach for America, City Year, and many others, while providing young Americans with valuable professional skills and leadership experience.

Visit OurTime.org to learn more about their efforts to expand national service opportunities, and how you can help.
