The NanoVNA is an open source VNA project by @edy555 and ttrftech that has recently become extremely affordable at less than US$50 for a fully assembled unit thanks to Chinese manufacturing (or a little more if you order it via Amazon).

Ohan Smit had recently been playing with the NanoVNA and came across a software package from Rune B. Broberg (5Q5R) called NanoVNASaver. NanoVNASaver is an open source program that can be used to read and plot data from the NanoVNA. It has some nice features like the ability to display multiple charts, increase the resolution up to 10k points, measure cable length via TDR calculations, save Touchstone files and more.

Over on his blog, Ohan has put up a walkthrough guide about using NanoVNASaver. He shows how to setup the application, calibrate the NanoVNA, and then demonstrates how to use NanoVNASaver to measure the response of some filters.

Later in the same post Ohan also includes an update about his experiments with some new experimental NanoVNA firmware that extends the maximum frequency range from the previous maximum of 900 MHz up to 1500 MHz. Results show that while it can work up to 1500 MHz, accuracy rapidly degrades above 900 MHz.

I have spent hours and hours trying to download NanoVNAsaver. What an absolutely awful load of rigmarole to go through. I have registered with Github, in an attempt to get some kind of sense out of this. I have even put Python 64bit (to no avail) on my widows 11 laptop.Why do they make things so difficult?

Then I started realizing that whatever you set, and run, on the Saver has no effect on what you are seeing on the Nano screen. So am I to understand that when you are running Saver, it is using the Nano outside the Nano display? And if I change anything in Saver, do I also have to re-calibrate in Saver?

Everything works fine on my linux box but when I tried to install nanovna-saver on my Mac I get this runtime message. Anyone have any ideas? I want to use my nanovna to collect data at the feed point of an antenna and my linux bos it too big to move out to the antenna.

Is there a document describing the NanoVNA-Saver SOFTWARE concept ?
I did not find much about HOW it interfaces with NanoVNA in github.
Flow chart / block diagram would be nice.
In pseudo code

1) Connect your nanoVNA to the usb port and make sure the nanoVNA is turned on.
2) Windows should generate a sound if it detects the presence of your device (you may see a driver msg in lower right of screen)
3) Open your system device manager and check for a driver error in the PORTS (COM & LPT)
or under VIRTUAL COM PORTS
4) If you see the following driver error: STMicroelectronics Virtual COM PORT, then you probably need to sign the usbser.sys driver as per my previous post. (make a back up a copy of the original usbser.sys for piece of mind)

This means the NanoVNASaver is started, probably because you imported it. If you want to debug going into the library code, you have to put the breakpoint before the import and step into the library or put it in the NanoVNASaver code. When you import a module or package, its top level code is executed.

So the NanoVNASaver has taken over here and it shows its main screen, initialized with setting from your personal configuration directory. Sounds good, but probably only after the program has finished it will return to your code in /mnt/RAID_124/PYTHON_NANO_PROJECT_FOLDER/NANO_JULY17/nanovna-saver.py. That is not what you want?

If a VNA is that simple, you might be asking why commercial ones are so expensive then, but the answer lies in the rather limited capabilities of the NanoVNA. It has a fundamental frequency range of 300 MHz, it uses an audio ADC, and its RF components are not of a particularly high spec. Compared with a commercial model that will have a frequency range in the GHz, a much higher specification ADC, a much lower noise figure, and a hugely more capable computing system to drive it, it becomes rapidly obvious where the extra cash goes before you have even considered matters such as calibration.

i have the same nanovna ,that it is the one i can say that they miss the CH 0 on it ,i have trouble seeing it firmware ,could it be a clone ,or it is real ,it is the same ,and o the pcb nothing written ,but it is well shieded .My question how do i know it firmware ,and how to update it .thanks .

edy555 design was an improwment from a previous design by a German radio amateur (forgot his call sign).
In turn a Chinese designer improved upon it and created the next revision that sparked a multitude of variants.
The newest variant (completely new hardware design) that goes to 3GHz and rivals older commercial equipment is S-A-A (NanoVNA 2.0).

yeah, and OwO is a bit of a clown. You can open-source something, and you can sell it yourself, but you have no right to complain when someone else sells the same product (which you open-sourced) for less and puts you out of business.

I feel your pain. Not specifically about the VNA stuff, but about having to make/build the package in order to make/build some other package in order to be able to install the thing that you actually need.

Readily available today in many forms: signal analyzers, real-time signal/spectrum analyzers and even mixed domain oscilloscopes all give you the ability to look at spectrums vs time as well as RF amplitude, frequency deviation and phase deviation vs time.

If I am looking at the right trace the Bafong whip antenna is surprisingly close to right. Perhaps add a wee tad of inductance and I think you would be hard pressed to do better. On the other hand, I may be reading the traces wrong and it could be awful. I thouht I saw it at 48 ohms and a couple nf. Or am I wrong? In nay case these look like fun toys to play with.

Hello ,i have a problem ,i have the same nanovna ,that they missed on it the CH0 ,and this is the only on e i see on the net.Could it be a clone or real one.ON the pcb there is nothing written ,only a good screening and shielding .My question o need to know what firmware is inside ,it came with no batt ,i have searched everywhee to know what firmware version is it in .And how and what i need to update it

Read the SWR measurement: The SWR graph is now displayed on the screen, with the frequency range on the horizontal axis and the SWR values on the vertical axis. You can use the marker feature to read specific SWR values at certain frequencies:
