LionelMessi gave the official start sign for election of the FIFA FIFPro World XI of 2013. In the coming months, FIFPro will be giving every professional football player in the world the opportunity to select his favourite eleven players. Messi cast the first vote on Thursday, thousands of other players will be filling in the voting papers soon.

Every year, FIFPro asks the reigning world footballer of the year to be the first player to cast a vote for the FIFA FIFPro World XI. Messi eagerly took the opportunity of filling in the form. His Barcelona team mates followed suit.

'Of course I consider it an honour to be the first to cast a vote, particularly because it is a very special election,' explained Messi. 'This is the only global award that is one hundred percent based on the votes of the players. Your colleagues know why a footballer is good. That is what makes being elected for the FIFA FIFPro World XI such a significant prize.'

Messi knows what he's talking about. In 2008, the then 21-year-old Messi received the World XI trophy for the first time. Since then, he has been in every successive FIFA FIFPro World XI. The Argentinian, now 26 years old, is the record holder with six selections - just as many of Cristiano Ronaldo.

In 2013, Messi led Barcelona to a new national title and to the Spanish Supercup. In the semi-finals of the Champions League, he had to watch injured from the side line as Bara failed to beat Bayern Mnchen, who went on to win the title.

This is the ninth year that FIFPro organises the World XI election. The world players union sent out almost 50,000 voting papers to 68 countries in Africa, America, Asia and Europe. The players will be able to fill in their form until 1 November. The eleven players (1 keeper, 4 defenders, 3 midfielders and 3 strikers) with the highest number of votes will be honoured on Monday 13 January 2014 during the FIFA Ballon d'Or Gala in Zurich, Switzerland.

Despite winning the title in one of his "last battles," as Messi described this Copa, the 37-year-old superstar did not pass the fitness test that could have opened the way for him to play his sixth World Cup in 2026.

Argentina successfully defended its South American title with a hard-fought, 1-0 win against Colombia in extra time. Messi left the pitch in Hard Rock Stadium in the 64th minute, breaking down without being touched.

The Copa was Messi's first major tournament since leaving European soccer to play in the less competitive Major League Soccer in the U.S. Still, he has missed several games over the last year for his Inter Miami club and Argentina due to muscle issues.

Messi felt muscular pains in his right leg in the second group match against Chile, which sidelined him from the following game against Peru. He did not deliver an impressive performance in the quarterfinals against Ecuador and missed his chance in the penalty shootout. In the semifinal victory over Canada, he scored his only goal in the tournament in the 2-0 win.

Messi's farewell to the national team is still on hold, but there's other players aged above 35 who are likely to have played their last major international tournament; winger Angel Di Maria (36), defender Nicolas Otamendi (36), and substitute goalkeeper Franco Armani (37).

Argentina does have up-and-coming players and a squad averaging 28 years of age when the veterans are not counted. That is partly why it held strong against Colombia despite the absence of its star for 56 minutes of play.

"I don't know whether we marked an era, but this team never ceases to surprise. It recovers from difficulties," Argentina Coach Lionel Scaloni said. "When (Messi) leaves, the team multiplies with the one that comes in and we play better in a different way."

Young talents such as Alejandro Garnacho, Valentin Carboni, Thiago Almada, Claudio Echeverri and Valentin Barco are not to be compared with the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, but they can help Argentina remain competitive when it defends the World Cup in 2026.

Argentina will return to action in September in World Cup qualifying against Chile and Colombia. The Argentines lead South America. That international window will give more hints about whether Messi's legend will go on or stop at Sunday's title.

Michelob Ultra is taking advantage of Messi's newfound fame in the USA, casting him in its latest commercial for the Super Bowl that also features one of the NFL's legendary quarterbacks and one of Hollywood's best actors today.

The commercial starts with Messi ordering a drink at a beachside bar. The bartender informs him that they are out of Michelob Ultra and she needs to get some more. The soccer star insists that he can wait.

While he steps aside to kill time, a soccer ball comes his way. Of course, one of the greatest players of all time can't pass up the chance to show off the skills, so he weaves his way in and around fellow beachgoers.

In the process, Jason Sudeikis and Dan Marino each make appearances. When someone near Sudeikis points out Messi, the actor remarks, "Would do you mean, Leo? We go way back." Shortly after, Messi kicks a ball the way out to Marino on a boat, who then shows off the arm by launching the ball back to Messi on the beach.

With a makeshift goal in sight (it's a hammock in between two trees), Messi closes in on the goaltender for the score. What stops Messi from finishing off the impressive sequence? Michelob Ultra, of course.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi bagged the best FIFA men's player prize for 2022 on Monday during an award ceremony in Paris. This was the second time that Messi has won the honour inaugurated by FIFA in 2016. The 35-year-old Messi got the award beating his Paris Saint-Germain teammate, and World Cup final rival, Kylian Mbappe as well as Karim benzema. The winner for the award is decided on the basis of the votes casted by the select national team captains and coaches.

One thing which came as a surprise was that Pepe casted the vote as a representative of Portugal in the place of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal captain refrained from the voting as the Al-Nassr star was benched in many games during the 2022 FIFA World Cup and hence senior player Pepe was given opportunity to cast his vote.

The award, which is voted for by national team coaches and captains, journalists and also fans, recognises a year in which the former Barcelona star crowned his glorious career by leading Argentina to victory at the World Cup.

"This year was just mad for me, to be able to achieve my dream that I had fought so hard for. In the end I got it and it was the most beautiful thing that has happened in my career," Messi said of his World Cup win as he collected his award.
