Alternate Relationship Types

I'm trying to restrict access to documents within collection using something akin to a GroupID.  My Users model has a GroupID and my other, restricted collection model has a similarly named field.  Relationships in Keystone (and maybe because of Mongoose) seem to be limited to ObjectIDs.  Is it possible to define a relationship and ultimately restrict visibility to documents by a different field?
