Thatfight, of course, was to ensure that Black Americans could freely exercise their constitutional right to vote, a right that had existed on paper for nearly a century. In practice, Black voters were systematically denied this right through poll taxes, intimidation, literacy tests, and violence when they tried to register or vote, particularly in Southern states.
The demonstrators kneeled down in the street to pray. The police told Lewis and Williams to turn the crowd around, but they refused, and the marchers were met with brutality: clouds of tear gas filled the air, and police and troopers beat them. Horses and dogs ran into the crowd, trampling people. Those who were able began to run.
She began regularly attending meetings and rallies at Brown Chapel Church. There, she found herself in the company of civil rights legends. She traveled with them to neighboring counties and communities to encourage voter registration.
Today, at 66, Sheyann is still dedicated to getting out the vote. After graduating from Tuskegee University in 1979, she wanted to find a way to inspire young people to take action, just as she had been inspired by her participation in the civil rights movement. She founded KEEP Productions Youth Development Mentoring and Modeling Program in 1980. Based in Montgomery, the program is designed to reach young people and help them build self-confidence, break out of unproductive patterns, and become successful leaders.

With the U.S. Navy being the host unit aboard U.S. Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth, operating on a joint base presents a unique working dynamic for the 301st Fighter Wing Base Civil Engineers. BCE engineering section works independently from the Navy, while the operations section works in collaboration with them. On the operations side, the Navy functions like a contractor; BCE requests and pays them to complete work orders. Strategic communication also plays a key role in this joint environment. The 301st Fighter Wing Base Civil Engineers are one of the most invaluable installation units and without them mission accomplishment would be in jeopardy. They are not only responsible for all Air Force real property [approx. 100 structures plus five foot radius] maintenance on the base, they also build for the future, safeguard the environment and train their Airmen to be combat-ready within the unique dynamics which come from working on a joint base.
"It's a very broad brush of organizations involved since we are on a joint base. We partner with the Navy and we get direct support from AFRC A4C," said Williams. "We also work with civilians, veterans, Air Force Reservists as well as guardsmen. We truly are a joint military service."
When it comes to compliance, the most impacted organizations specifically are maintenance, fuels and transportation (logistic readiness squadron). These are important tactical units within the 301 FW needed to accomplish the mission. The more units involved, the more dynamic the mission becomes.
Strategic communication is critical in order to accomplish their mission, especially when working with the variety of organizations they do. Williams described a recent challenge BCE faced during the winter storm earlier this year, and how their team took care of people and the mission, while saving time and money.
"In February, a major polar vortex happened, and we suffered over $1.5 million worth of damage to several buildings. Our team had to respond, while their own families were under the same stress, and they isolated and minimized as much as they could," Williams said. "The operations team made sure to isolate the damage and ensure it was minimally operational. While the engineers, in partnership with our environmental flight, came up with the projects and executed them in two short months, which would normally take six months to a year."
On January 8, 2021, the former Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett selected the 301 FW as the F-35A Lighting II operational beddown location. The eight year process started in 2016, with the selection releasing funds to the wing to build structures, retrain Airmen and get the base ready to receive the F-35 in 2024. Throughout the entire process, BCE continues to be hard at work to ensure a seamless transition and coordination will be key.
Although this BCE team has been recognized by the state in areas such as pollution prevention, industry of the year awards as well a long list of achievements and projects completed, Williams shared the key to their success.

Wisconsin Air National Guard units, under the order of Gov. Tony Evers, provide protection of life and property, and preserve peace, order and public safety. State missions include disaster relief in times of earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and forest fires, search and rescue, protection of vital public services, and defense support to civil authorities.
Ensuring the security of America's skies is a mission the Air National Guard shares equally with the active Air Force. As part of the total force, the Wisconsin Air National Guard provides operationally ready combat units and personnel to fulfill war and contingency commitments when called to federal active duty by the President or Congress.
The 325th FW is host to 20 tenant organizations from multiple Major Commands and across several military mission sets located at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla. The wing is comprised of the 325th Operations Group, 325th Maintenance Group, 325th Mission Support Group and 325th Medical Group.
The wing provides command guidance and operational control of the 325th Operations Group, 325th Maintenance Group, 325th Medical Group and 325th Mission Support Group and is directly responsible for several functional areas.
The 325th Operations Group is responsible for directing the flying and support operations for a F-35 fighter squadron and operations support squadron while preparing for the arrival of two additional F-35 squadrons. The 95th Fighter Squadron is a combat ready F-35 unit. The 325th Operations Support Squadron trains air traffic control personnel and intelligence officers for worldwide assignment, and supports daily operations of the group. The group staff provides guidance and assistance in successfully executing the training mission and ensures quality performance and standardized procedures for pilots and weapons directors for worldwide assignment to the combat Air Forces.
The 325th Maintenance Group provides safe, secure, reliable maintenance for the world's finest Air Dominance combat wing. The 325th MXG is composed of three active squadrons and a supporting operations flight whose unique missions directly contribute to the overall organizational success.
The 325th Medical Group staff operates as an outpatient medical facility with family practice, dental, flight medicine and women's health clinics. The group also offers a clinical pharmacy, nutritional medicine programs, and essential base support services such as public health, bioenvironmental engineering and aerospace physiology.
The primary mission of the 325th Mission Support Group is to provide dominant mission support and combat-ready Airmen to Team Tyndall and worldwide expeditionary forces. These support services and activities include providing civil engineering, security, communications, personnel, services, contracting, supply, and transportation support for 21,000 active duty, civilian, dependent, and retired personnel.
There are few things more thrilling than flying a fighter jet! These precision aircraft can soar through the sky at top speeds with the ability to perform spins, rolls, tailslides, and tumbles under the expert control of the best pilots in the world. The rigorous training to become a fighter jet pilot encompasses everything from technical aviation skills to physicality and flight discipline to mental aptitude.
All SCA flights are instructional in nature conducted by certified flight instructors in accordance with federal aviation regulations under 14 CFR Part 61 of the United States Code. Instruction will be provided during ground and flight portions for all flights.
