Can one import data from TreeDBnotes (http://www.mytreedb.com/
treedbnotes_free.html; it's another tree-structure note management
program)? And if yes, how?

Hello Will,
I have looked at TreeDBNotes features, and it can import from KeyNote
and from TreePad. I'm not sure what formats offers to export.

In the homepage of TreeDBNotes appears:
<<There are functions of imports and exports from other formats (txt,
TreePad, html, doc ...).>>
Also:
<<Export to txt, html, wri, doc, Palm Doc (PDB, PRC) and more.>>

KeyNote allows to import from TreePad. Also from .RTF, .HTML and .TXT.
With this last four formats, you can import each file as new note or
as tree nodes (inside the note selected, if this is multi-level tree)
Once you have nodes in a note, it is easy to reorganize them, moving
it inside one note or between several ones.

You have that program, don't you know it is possible to export to
TreePad? If it isn't possible, using RTF could be an option.

Perhaps, someone could give you more advices.

Regards
Daniel

Hello Daniel,

Thank you for the reply.

Apparently one cannot export note trees from TreeDBNotes to TreePad.
I suppose I could manually redo the tree nodes, and copy and paste the
notes from TreeDBNotes into Keynote--but that would be very time-
consuming.

If you can think of anything else I can do to make the data transfer
easier, please let me know. Thanks.

Would file association work--i.e., is there a way to associate
TreeDBNotes files with Keynote files?

Also, do you know of any other tree-structure note management software
that may allow more importing/exporting formats, which perhaps I could
use as an transitional software between TreeDBNotes and Keynotes?

Thank you again for your help,

Will

Hi Daniel,

Here is some more info about exporting from TreeDBNotes to Keynote:

It's true that you can export notes in RTF from TreeDBNotes to
Keynote, but the multi-level tree structure for the notes' headings is
not kept in this type of exporting/importing: you end up with a bunch
of individual notes files, rather than the hierarchically organized
tree nodes with their attached notes. What I need to export and
import is the so-called "subtree," which includes both the note-
heading tree and the notes. I tried doing it in several ways, but
couldn't make it work. Here is an exerpt from TreeDBNotes' help
manual on importing/exporting--please see if you can figure out a way
to export/import subtrees:

Advanced Import and Export tools:
Import from *.txt, *.wri, *.rtf, Excell, Word, *.hjt TreePAD, *.csv,
*.html and more;
Export to *.txt, *.wri, *.doc and more;
Insert Tables, Images, Lines, Symbols, Objects...
Export to HTML Pages along with your tables, images, and colors;
Export / Import Subtree.

How to use
Main menu: Edit/Import Notes (Export Notes)
Select file format (rtf, html, xls)
Press "Open"

Export Selected Notes to files (RTF, RVF, Text Ansi, Text Unicode,
HTML CSS, HTML, MS Word).
You may export all selected notes to external files (RTF, RVF, Text
Ansi, Text Unicode, HTML CSS, HTML, MS Word). For this purpose choose
Nodes from a tree, and press:
Main Menu: Edit/Export Notes
All of a note will be exported to files. The name of a file equally to
Node-title. The structure of a tree is not kept.

Export Subtree
You may export any subtree of a Notes Tree (Tree structure, Nodes
Icons, Titles, Colors, Folders and Notes). For this purpose choose the
first subtree Node, and press:
Main Menu: Notes/Import-Export/Export Subtree
[Ctrl] + Right-click Editor menu: Import-Export/Export Subtree
Right-Click Nodes menu: Tools/Export-Import/Export Subtree
Choose destination folder and press OK. After that, Subtree will be
exported to *.rtf files. The structure of a tree will be exported in a
special *.sbt file. SBT file is the simple CSV file with tree nodes
properties (Level, Icon, Color, IsFolder, Filename, Title). In the
future you can use all these files (*.sbt, *.rtf) for import of a
tree.

SBT file source (example)
Level,Icon,Color,IsFolder,Filename,Title
0,13,16777215,1,167_Welcome.rtf,Welcome
1,24,16777215,0,169_Terminology.rtf,Terminology
1,23,16777215,0,168_Tree_structure.rtf,"Tree structure"
1,13,16777215,1,172_Database.rtf,Database
2,100,16777215,0,173_Database_tools.rtf,"Database tools"
2,115,16777215,0,174_Database_encryption.rtf,"Database encryption"
1,113,16777215,0,171_System_Requirements.rtf,"System Requirements"
1,0,16777215,0,170_e_Book.rtf,e-Book

Export Notes to CSV file
You may export text notes (plain text) to *.csv file (Node title and
Node plain text). For this purpose choose the Nodes, and press:
Main Menu: Notes/Import-Export/Export to CSV file
[Ctrl] + Right-click Editor menu: Import-Export/Export to CSV file
Right-Click Nodes menu: Tools/Export-Import/Export to CSV file
Choose filename for csv file and press OK. After that, al selected
Notes will be saved in to the CSV file.

Exported Notes (CSV example)
"Node title 1","Text node 1."
"Node Title 2","Node 2 text example."
"Node Title 3","Node 3 text. Line 1","Line 2","Line 3"

----------------------------------------------

If direct exporting from TreeDBNotes to Keynote cannot be effected
because of the mismatched formats for exporting/importing provided by
the 2 applications, I was just wondering if there are any format-
converting software tools out there that may be used to deal with this
mismatch (e.g., by making some version of the csv format that both
TreeDBNotes and Keynote can process?).

Looking forward to your answers and suggestions.

Thanks,

Will

There is a utility from original KeyNote: KntConvert (you can download
it from http://code.google.com/p/keynote-nf/downloads/list)
<<<
1. WHAT IS KEYNOTE CONVERTER?

KeyNote Converter (kntconvert.exe) is a companion
application to KeyNote (see URL above). Its purpose
is to convert text files of various formats into
KeyNote files.

The Converter is independent of KeyNote itself.
Instead of importing files directly into KeyNote,
the converter just reads a source file, creates
a new KeyNote file (with the .knt extension), and
imports the source file as a single tree-type note
in the newly created file.

Optionally, the converter can import a file into
an already existing KeyNote file. Again, the
imported file will become a new tree-type note
inside the .KNT file. You can import data into
an ancrypted .KNT file, but the converter will
not create a new encrypted file.

The converter does not create simple-RTF notes,
i.e. notes that do not have a tree. It is meant
specifically for plain text files containing data
which can be sensibly represented using the tree
structure that KeyNote offers.
>>>

But it is only for plain text..
Anyway, the combination of files (*.sbt, *.rtf) exported from a
subtree, could be enough to create a new knt file. It is very simple.
I suppose that Icon is the index of an element in a icons file. What
is the meaning of the field 'IsFolder'?

I think that it should be very easy to create an utility to generate
a .knt file from files .rtf and that .sbt specification. If you don't
find another solution and I find a little time I'll prepare it.

But for now, please, try to look in web ('googling') for such kind of
format-converting software tools, probably exists.

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for telling me about Keynote Converter.  It seems to be a great tool--the pity is, it doesn't support RTF.  Although TreeDBNotes seems to be able to export notes to a plain text format, it cannot export note-heading trees along with the notes this way.  I googled for other solutions, but couldn't find any.  It looks like a new tool created by you to effect this kind of conversion or exporting/importing will be my last hope!

Many thanks,

Will

Hi Daniel,

Is there a way to set font type and size for all Keynote files instead of setting them for each note/node?  I could only find a setting for tab/tree headings in the Configuration Options--it doesn't seem to be for notes.

Thanks,

Will

Yes, you can set default values about note setting, tree setting, and
other:
Tools --> Default Settings...

This options set default for all newly created files.
