For the first time since the late 1960s, Manchester emerged as the capital of English football in 2011/12, as 19-times champions United were confronted by local rivals City in a local skirmish which spilled over into a battle for the Barclay's Premier League title.

Sir Alex Ferguson had seen off all challengers in the Premier League era, but he celebrated his 25th year at the Old Trafford helm with one of his sternest challenges yet: battling not only the inflated riches and ambition of City, but also overhauling his own squad and blooding a new generation of youngsters.

United's twinkling talents dazzled in the early months of the campaign, but were slowed by a damaging home defeat to City and a crippling run of injuries. There were also harsh lessons in European and domestic cup competitions, but the Reds roared back in time-honored fashion to sprint for the line in an absorbing race for the league title.

With highlights, exclusive interviews and analysis, the Manchester United 2011/12 Season Review will take you through every twist and turn of a typically undulating season following the Reds. From the early-season swagger to the breathless late charge for glory, via every peak and trough in between, there is no better way to relive another thrilling campaign.

In this guide I will be showing you how to play like Manchester City in their 2011/2012 season. The Citizens managed to win their first league title since 1968 after a dramatic season which ended after City won by goal difference against Manchester United. Manchester City won the league with 89 points and only 10 goals seperated arch rivals United from winning their 20th League Title. The Citizens won only the Premier League tile in their 2011/2012 campaign although they were close to winning the Community Shield which ended with United winning it.

Manchester City were very strong in their ability to create and finish scoring chances which was mainly because of the players finishing ability. They also showed their strength by scoring from long shots situations. One thing that City was strong in was by their individual player techniques because of their wide range of top players. They were also strong in scoring from through ball situation, wing play situation, the ability to out power their opponent by outnumbering their defense and set piece situations from penalties, free kicks and corner kicks.

Manchester City's style of play was by controlling the game more in the opponents half and by passing their ball shortly mainly because of the vast amount of skills the player has. They played possessive football and through ball passing. City also regularly rotate their first 11.

One weak point for City in their 2011/2012 season was their defence especially their wing back as they were normally out of position going up front and a compact 4 at times up front leaving little options when man marked.

Manchester City played with a supposedly 4-4-1-1 but after reviewing some stats, I have concluded that City actually play a 4-2-3-1 instead of their supposedly 4-4-1-1 mainly because you cannot have 3 attacking layers in midfield in real life. Now onto the Team Instructions.

The DL and DR plays as a wing back utilising the wings to attack the ball forward providing crosses in for the attackers, Gael Clichy plays the left back role mainly because he is the best left back at City and Richards is a City graduate who is England's 2nd best right back after Glen Johnson. For this role you will need a player with good Crossing, Dribbling, Stamina, Tackling, Movement and Pace stats.

The 2 rocks in defense for City, Strong in their aerial abilty, They play in an centre back role making passes to the mid fields to start their attack. To be fighting for the title you will need good and solid defence and luckily for you, you've got the best defensive duos in the league.

A beast in midfield, He is a balanced minded player who helps with Attack and Defense by running forwards in Attack and back in Defending situations. Yaya Toure plays as a Box To Box Midfielder which he is used to after playing 3 years with Barcelona FC.

The Ball Winning Midfielder main job is to close down the opposition and win the ball. However he will need to have good technical abilities for this job. For this role, The player will need good tackling and stamina stats, Lucky for you there is the likes of Gareth Barry who at the age of 30 still possesses some pretty good stats for this role.

The main role for this player is to cut inside from the flanks and run directly at the centre of the opposition's defence. This is one of the reasons why the DL and DR play in a wing back position to give width to the team. For this role you will need a player somewhat like Cristiano Ronaldo with his dribbling, passing, decisions and pace. Good enough you've got good players for this position although not as good as Ronaldo, They can play almost like Ronaldo in this position with their ability strength.

For this role, the player aim is to drop into the holes between the oppositions midfield and defence, thus making himself available and ready for passes from his teammates. His passing, technique, creativity, decisions and teamwork stats must be god for this role. For this role you've got Argentinian wizard, Sergio Agero who managed to become Manchester City's top scorer with 29 goals!

In this role, the player will need to possess all the technical attributes of a Deep Lying Forward, the goal scoring ability of a Poacher and the strength and power of a Target Man. Such a player transcends tactical instructions and should simply be allowed to do his own thing. Carlos Tevez would do a good job in this role but too bad he had a row with City's manager, Roberto Mancini thus allowing Edin Džeko to play in this role which went well with him scoring 18 goals in the 2011/12 season campaign.

As you can see Manchester City have a quality squad with top players in every position mainly because of their money splashing ability. In the test run I did, Manchester City finished 1st in the Premier League with 76 points and came runners up in the Europa Cup.

In this role, the player will need to possess all the technical attributes of a Deep Lying Forward, the goal scoring ability of a Poacher and the strength and power of a Target Man. Such a player transcends tactical instructions and should simply be allowed to do his own thing.

During his time with the Red Devils, Ferguson secured an impressive 38 trophies. At the age of 71, he held the distinction of being the oldest manager in the Premier League or the Football League. On May 8th, 2013, Ferguson announced his retirement from his managerial position.

The misery of the 2011/12 season seemed to motivate Manchester United to avoid a tense finish to the season. Their determination to win every weekend was evident, especially through the consistent performances of key players like Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra.

Most squads since this season pale in comparison to the starting XI below. Even with the likes of Ronaldo, Varane, and Sancho having played at Old Trafford since, top online bookmakers in 2023 continue to offer better odds on their perennial rivals, Manchester City. But perhaps the primary reason is due to the absence of Fergie.

Patrice Evra, widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in Premier League history, was a prominent figure for United during that season, making 42 appearances. However, he departed from the club merely a year later. After leaving United, Evra had stints at Juventus, Marseille, and West Ham before retiring in 2018. He has since gained recognition for his exceptional contributions as a football pundit.

Rio Ferdinand, widely regarded as one of the greatest English central defenders in history, made his move to Manchester United in 2002 from their rivals Leeds United, setting a record transfer fee of 30 million at the time. Ferdinand enjoyed a remarkable 12-year tenure with the club before briefly joining Queens Park Rangers in 2014 and ultimately retiring from professional football in 2015. Currently, he is involved in various roles, including working as a TV pundit.

Antonio Valencia, the former Ecuadorian international, went to Manchester United in 2009 from Wigan Athletic, where he showcased his skills for ten seasons. Following his departure from the Red Devils, he continued his football journey, playing in Mexico and Ecuador, before retiring in May 2021.

In the absence of this understanding, they have resorted to a simplified belief that the key to success lies in finding a single exceptional individual. They hoped that Moyes, Van Gaal, Mourinho or Solskjaer would be that person, but unfortunately, they were not. The jury is still out on Ten Hag. As a result, the club will surely embark on a continued search soon, hoping to come closer to their aspirations, even as they continue to drift further away from being a major player in elite-level football.
