I have often wondered about a tool like ClassDojo and the debate on extrinsic vs. intrinsic motivation. This article by Larry Cuban was a nice overview. https://larrycuban.wordpress.com/2014/03/15/on-using-and-not-using-classdojo-ideological-differences/
We've had a teacher use Classcraft at the 9th grade level last year. At first he really liked it to "Gamify" his classroom, however by 2nd semester, the students tired of it, and he ended up abandoning it.
As Cuban notes, by secondary, students intrinsic motivation fades, and they are just working to get as many points as they can. However, if you can bridge the two and get students to behave because they know they ought to, then it might be worth it.
