Hello all!

I'm curious how other districts manage or provide access to Seesaw for Special Education teachers? I'm asking because there is an odd workflow for these teachers and communication from families as well as alerting SPED teachers to student work.

Right now, SPED teachers are not on Seesaw at all. In order to learn about communication between families and gen ed teachers (which oftentimes happens on Seesaw, as we advertise to our families), the gen ed teacher needs to email the correspondence to the SPED teacher. Obviously, this process is rife with confusion.

Not to mention that SPED teachers cannot view classroom materials that are posted on Seesaw in order to support the student-- they must wait until the student is in front of them and shows them the work.

While we can add the SPED teachers as co-teachers to their caseload students' classes, then the SPED teacher has access to all communication happening between families and the gen ed teacher (privacy is then an issue...).

Thoughts on how to maneuver this? I appreciate anecdotes or workflows that you have from your site that uses Seesaw!

Hi Elisabeth,

We've changed how we've done this a bit now that we have Seesaw connected through Clever. In the past we just allowed the classroom teachers and Sped teachers to join each other's classes as they saw fit but with the move to Clever only our Classroom Teachers are synced over into the system. We do add in our SPED teachers into Seesaw but only as they request, sometimes for their own class and sometimes to join other teachers' classes that their students are in. Generally we prefer to have them create their own class if possible. Sometimes the classroom teacher will post the modified assignments/assessments in Seesaw, sometimes the SPED teacher will depending how those relationships work at each parking/grade level.

Either way we just remind them of the fact that data privacy and that being in a SPED role they have access to more data than your standard teacher (we have the same issue within our SIS) and that they need to use their professional judgement to access the appropriate information. Also rarely does a teacher have enough spare time to go poking around just for kicks.

We use Clever to create classes for Seesaw. This, of course, only works for teachers with rostered classes in the SIS (Infinite Campus). Some SpEd/GenEd teachers go the co-teacher route, but if the SpEd teacher requests it, I will make a custom section for them in Clever that has their caseload to create their own class in Seesaw. This works well especially for the SpEd teacher so they don't have to wade through multiple teachers and multiple classes in Seesaw. I have done this for EL teachers as well.

Our District uses Classlink and Seesaw. For general education teachers, this isn't an issue to get their rosters. Our tech department has to do some manual creation for special education and EL teachers. Those teachers do get added in as co-teachers so they can access course materials to support the students on their caseloads. Our tech in short, basically expects staff to act in adult ways. Regardless of the teacher title, all of the information is expected to remain private. As Patrick said, special education teachers have access to far more data and information about students than general education teachers (as one who taught both, I can attest to this).
