Hello All,

We have students that continually have their names pronounced incorrectly for their school career. Is anyone trying to tackle this or have any ideas? I have heard of NameCoach which could integrate with Canvas. We use Infinite Campus as our SIS. It'd be great if that was a way to pull up a student and know how to pronounce their name before calling home, working with them, etc.

Thanks,

Jim

I've not used NameCoach(yet) but my daughter's college used it. Students were asked to add it to their email signatures. It integrated with their Moodle systems and was also used for graduation so the administrator had correct name pronunciation. I've also seen it on a handful of emails from other K12 schools.

We did a demo with the vendor last year. It sounds like they can set up a spreadsheet of users and pronunciation links, too.

I think NameDrop can do something similar, but it doesn't appear to be geared toward the education market.

I believe both tools also include pronouns. It's a tool on my wishlist. I feel terrible for the folks - kiddos and adults - who are tortured by mispronunciation.

Our SIS, Synergy, has a Name Pronunciation tool we can enable for families and/or students. We have it turned on so that when a parent accesses their student's info (attendance, grades, etc) it prompts them to record an audio clip of the student's name pronunciation.

I'd reach out to Infinite Campus to see if they have or are working on something similar.

I know it is not as tied to SIS systems, but many teachers will use Flipgrid or Mote at the start of a term to have kids correctly pronounce their name for not just the teacher using the SIS, but also for other students, paras, etc. working in those rooms.

It is sooooooo important that we pronounce kids names correctly. Reminded me of a video a Keynote speaker I listened to recently shared called Facudo the Great: https://youtu.be/s8FheuSE7w4
Anyway, the Keynote speaker had a difficult name for people to pronounce correctly. Her whole message was on identity and how you name is so closely tied to it, so that when people (intentionally or unintentionally) mispronounce your name it robs you of your true self. The Keynote was part of a virtual conference for 4 districts. At the end of the Keynote, one of the district's superintendents came on the screen to thank the speaker, and after hearing her say her name numerous times over the course of 45 minutes, the superintendent mispronounced her name... TWICE! So many were offended by that, and I felt embarressed even though it was not even my superintendent.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts. I really appreciate it. We are still trying to figure it out.  I can see how mote/flipgrid would work, but scale and the changing of classes and access by front office staff would be a challenge.  I do like the idea of typical phonetically from a simplicity standpoint, but that assumes that the  FUH-NET-IC spelling is easy enough to follow.  The dream is that SIS feature that it sounds like synergy has. Come on Campus....

Have a great weekend,

Jim

I wonder if there is some way to attach a .wav file of the student pronouncing their name to the student record. That way a teacher or other staff can look it up any time they need it. I'd be surprised if Infinite Campus or others don't already have a field for that.

It is already a part of the software in Synergy.  The parents or students can record themselves pronouncing the name through the parent or student portal, and then there is a button to click to hear the pronunciation next to the student name.  Sorry, that doesn't help if you are using Infinite Campus though!
