Over fifteen years ago, Oasis released a little debut called Definitely Maybe, a title that has helped spawn small-town New England emo bands and half-assed romantic comedies. The title itself is a rather interesting linguistic paradox. Definitely is a word showing something is official, like That party is definitely happening tonight. And maybe is a word basically meaning that the future is uncertain, such as, Maybe that party is happening tonight. Clearly these British rockers were thinking outside the box, and that is, quite frankly, an understatement.

My memories of Oasis go back to very early in my childhood. I can recall afternoons listening to Wonderwall on the radio as I built Legos. And I definitely bumped (Whats the Story) Morning Glory all the time throughout high school. But in the fall of 2005, I still had never heard the birth of Oasis. That was until my friend Tyler, who has a tendency to call me out on my insufficient music knowledge (so he says), was shocked at the fact I had never heard their song, Married with Children, while we sat around being lazy one day after school. Married with Children is the albums closer, a clean, dual-guitar track with tongue-and-cheek lyrics about an obnoxious girlfriend. It was the sonic equivalent of my first time being drunk in the sense that it provoked feelings I could never explain aloud: the melody, the simplicity, Liams half-Pistols/half-Beatles sneer and Noels guitar. And this was the end of the album? I had to hear the rest…

Award-winning journalist, author and broadcaster Dan Nolan didn't have to think too long about a record that got him high. Coming up in Manchester UK in the early 90s, he was there right at the start of the band Oasis and their meteoric rise to superstardom. We sat down to discuss their eight times platinum 1994 debut 'Definitely Maybe', and it was definitely NOT shite.

Definitely maybe was recorded in several studios from Manchester to London in the winter of 1993 through to the spring of 1994 and with several producers at the helm. But early recording sessions were to prove fruitless. Both the band and the engineers struggled to capture the right sound that Oasis were now creating at live shows. In early 1994, the band once again returned to the studio to attempt to record the album. With Mark Coyle at the mixing desk, the results were better but by no means satisfactory. Owen Morris was bought into the project to mix and master these recordings. As the band had recorded the rhythm parts live and Noel had recorded multiple overdubs, Morris was able to strip away the tracks and rebuild them in the mix.

When five lads from Manchester took on the world with their seminal debut album Definitely Maybe, nobody could have known that the album would kick off a legendary career like Oasis have had. Except, maybe, Oasis themselves.

100% agreed with what you said, my error in the piece above. 'definitely maybe' started the mainstream loudness war of the CD era, but it existed since the 50s with jukeboxes and early LPs and only continued as time went on. now there isn't much louder anyone can go before reaching overt digital distortion...

A certain Stone Roses feel to this one. And that's maybe why it's ranked so low. There's nothing wrong with the Stone Roses, but the sound, while catchy enough, is a kind of bastard-middle-child between the brash, rhythmic bursts of heavy-Oasis, and the softer, more melodic and reflective Oasis that created Wonderwall and the like. Not a bad track, but not their most memorable.
