When you remove an email account, Outlook stops syncing new emails from that account. It also deletes your email account's cached content, such as emails and attachments. However, note that your original emails with your email service are retained.

You'll see a warning message that says your email account's offline cached content will be deleted. This only affects the local copy of your account data on your computer; your original data associated with your account is retained.

If you'd like to permanently delete your Outlook account, you'll have to close your Microsoft account. Doing so will remove all the data associated with your account, including emails, purchases, and other items.

To proceed with that, head to our dedicated guide on how to delete a Microsoft account. There, follow the steps to put an end to your account. Once you've done that, your account will be closed and you won't be able to access it anymore.

You'll need to ensure that the account you want to move is selected first (you can confirm this by clicking in the top left as soon as you open the app, if this is a work account it will be a briefcase icon).

Been trying to eliminate a OneDrive account w/o success. And I can't sign out of account in OneDrive as that option is grayed out. The other OneDrive account the Sign Out option is active. Here's the whole story:

On my Android device (Samsung Galaxy Note10+) I have two one drive accounts I've been using: one a school account and the other a personal account and have been doing so for a long time now without issue.

I've tried deleting account in phone's settings but it keeps coming back. So, I've gone into Apps Settings and Forced Stop on OneDrive, Disabled, Cleared Cache and Data, deleted all OneDrive accounts but, after restarting OneDrive, the unwanted account pops back up again.

And I'll take this opportunity to mention a site that I run: the 365 Training Portal -- it's an attempt at organizing the many Microsoft 365 resources that are out there -- I got tired of trying to use bookmarks/favorites. Maybe you'll find it useful too?

You just inspired me to have another go at it, come to find that the account that I had tried to remove from OneDrive actually is gone now. I guess there was a back-end issue that we'll never understand. :)

While your post is very much appreciated, as stated in the initial post, attempts were made to delete the unwanted account and it kept returning. So while I know that your post was intended to be helpful it's unfortunately not a solution that works in this instance.

So, this is on a Samsung phone (Note10+). Samsung said i had to sign out of, or delete my Samsung account. It's linked, somehow, with OneDrive and messes things up. As soon as i got rid of that account, OneDrive started behaving correctly.

What I did to fix it THIS time is logged into my Samsung account online and then went to "Services" and "Unlinked" my microsoft account. Then I was able to go back to my OneDrive app and viola, I could log out.

@nitesh28 Although this was not quite the right fix for me, it did point me in the right direction. I had not realised that my Microsoft account being linked to my Samsung account was preventing the update to OneDrive. Once I removed the link, I was able to sign out of OneDrive and sign into the correct account. Wow - I am so relieved to get it sorted. So thank you!

@Graham McHugh this solved it. by removing the Microsoft service.. then clear cache & storage of the OneDrive app. then relaunch app then reconnect / relink the Microsoft OneDrive service on the mobile settings.

Additionally, removing the primary on outlook is a pain. If it is the only account in outlook it is the primary. Try following this link. In my experiences, it was almost easier to uninstall and re-install outlook. (office)

@Dubla89 this was my exact issue, thanks for sharing your workaround. Definitely frustrating that there isn't an official solution to what I'm sure is a fairly common issue, and especially frustrating that it would be so easy to avoid by logging out before your org removes access, but there's no way to know that until it's too late and you're already stuck in infinite authentication purgatory

I'm trying to add my new work account to my mobile Teams app and it keeps telling me to remove the one that is on there but it won't let me, just goes in a loop like another reader mentioned. Still unable to add new account or delete other accounts. This Teams app is the biggest piece of BS Microsoft has turned out.

I cannot figure out one topic and I am looking for some help. In Outlook, I have two email accounts with the same name, but different domains (so like : name.l...@aaaa.com and name.l...@bbbb.com). Both of those accounts have some tasks and Outlook is showing me those all mish-mashed in the view. I was looking for a way to at least separate those tasks or ideally remove tasks from the B domain from the view but I cannot find a proper filter. I found a suggesstion for using "changed by" option but that does not seem to work properly here because the names are the same and outlook keeps giving some weird results (some tasks disappear but not the ones intended, or does not react to the filter etc). Trying to filter out the domain does not bring any results (unless I am doing it wrong). I tried using Outlook Data File condition but this filter just does not seem to work.

@Barszczyk You are using the To-do list or the to-do bar? If they are in different accounts, you want to filter by account. To filter in the to-do bar, right click on the field names and choose View settings.

@Diane Poremsky

I am using a To-Do Bar. I know where to find view settings. The by account filter does not work correctly or I do not know how to use this.

I made a test with my mailbox and a group mailbox on the same domain.

When I used filter Email Account->contains-> "nameofthegroupmailbox", all the tasks were gone.
When I used filter Email Account->contains-> "mylastname" Outlook showed only tasks from the group mailbox.

Either this is very inconsistent or I do not know how to use this.

As mentioned, I found the tip to use "changed by" field, which is working fine when filtering group mailbox from my private one, but the field does not seem to work when both accounts have the same name but a different domain - To-Do Bar will just show all the tasks from both accounts.

@Barszczyk click on one of the tasks in your to do bar to open the Task List menu. Under Arrangement click the expand arrow on the right (line with a down arrow under it) select view settings from there. Under Group By... select how to group the tasks. I opted for Recipient Name which sorts by the person who received the email or created the task. that way I can close their list of tasks (i just see the name but not all their tasks)

I had the same issue but by using Field Chooser to drag the Outlook Data File field to the column headers and right clicking and grouping by this field, I was able to at least have them grouped where I could then collapse the Outlook account that I didn't use as frequently. Not exactly a filter, but works well enough for me. Not sure if that will help you.

@Diane Poremsky What other ways can a mailbox be added? As I have seen some of my clients who are Exec Assistants have no problem with tasks from their Execs account showing whilst others do? I feel that it is inherent in the way they were set up?
Also, previously I had been able to successfully isolate just the one account through the application of the filter: Changed by is exactly

I'm hoping someone can help with this scenario. I've recently separated from my company and was not able to delete the Office 365 account tied to the company off my iPhone before the account was locked/deleted. Somehow the Outlook email account was synced to the Mail app (even though I don't recall actively allowing it to do that) so the account now appears as an account in Mail.

I have been able to delete the cache of mail and even remove the account from the Outlook app which has now been removed from the phone. However, the O365 account still shows up in Mail. When I go to Settings > Mail > Accounts and click on the O365 account it does not give me the option to delete the account.

A reminder that I can no longer log into the account as it was managed and deleted by my former company. I'd really like to eradicate any trace of the former company from my personal phone. Has anyone experienced this? Do you have a solution?

If there is not one there, and you don't have the option to remove the account, double check to make sure you have not set restrictions on your phone to prevent account changes as a security measure. You'll need to turn that restriction off in order to remove the account.

If you have not done so, you may end up having to erase your phone and set it up from scratch. I've seen that before when managed devices were not properly take out of the management system prior to removal of the account from the tenant.

Once you disable the account, you no longer receive mail on your computer. Plus, you won't be able to find old emails or the related calendar information on your computer. If you need access to email and dates from an account you deleted from your computer using the above procedures, log in to the email service provider's website. You'll find all your information there.

The Outlook mobile (formerly Acompli) app stores your Exchange logincredentials on external servers in the cloud. If you were to deletethe app without removing your account, those credentials could stillpersist in the cloud, leading to lockouts or other login problems, aswell as making your Indiana University accounts vulnerable to securityissues. For these reasons, UITS has blocked the Outlook app from theIU Exchange servers, and recommends that you remove your account fromthe app before deleting the app from your devices.
