Chess Titans is a chess video game with 3D graphics developed by Oberon Games and included in Windows Vista and Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate. It is a fully 3D animated, photorealistic interactive chess game with ten difficulty levels when played against the computer. It can be played by two participants, or one player against the computer.[1]
Another chess program by Microsoft known simply as Chess was bundled in Microsoft Entertainment Pack 4 for earlier versions of Windows in 1992.[3] It was developed by David Norris, a former Microsoft employee and author of the chess engine "Ziggurat".[4]

The game is fully animated and designed for demonstrating the hardware-accelerated graphics capabilities of the earlier Windows Presentation Foundation in Windows Vista. The game features a photorealistic board which can be rotated in 3D,[5] and themes are available for the chess pieces and board. The game showcases the 3D capabilities of Vista on the desktop.[6]
On each player's turn, Chess Titans displays the last move made by the opponent. The player can also click on a chess piece to highlight all valid moves for that piece. These features can be turned off in the Options dialog box.
You might like to play chess sometimes, but then you want to try something else. You can install other Windows games like Hearts, Solitaire, and Minesweeper if you choose. These are classics that bring up great memories for many digital gamers.
Prior to its release, Microsoft had previously bundled a somewhat more primitive-looking, though by no means any less playable, computerised rendition of the "game of champions" by the name of Microsoft Chess; so Chess Titans is essentially an overhauled version of this game, awash with new photo-realistic visuals of the board and playing pieces with 3-dimensional graphics. Gameplay-wise, it's classic, unembellished chess: every standard game starts two opposing players out on an 8x8 chequered grid of black and white squares, with two lines of pieces taking up the 16 spaces at the farthest ends.
All in all, Chess Titans for Windows PCs isn't going to be anything that you'd prioritise over the hottest new AAA gaming title. It's computerised chess, and even chess has its limits. But that's no huge problem at all; after all, this was designed as a free time-waster that you can just access via your Windows 'Games' menu and blow anything from between a few minutes to a whole afternoon on. It replicates the game of chess and all its rules faultlessly with a perfectly fine presentation and no areas in need of any dire improvement. It can suit any player of any skill, as well as serve as a useful tutorial to the chess newcomer. It doesn't really offer anything new or different to what you'd get just from playing a standard board game if that's what works for you, otherwise it's a very good, customisable, challenging and replayable PC chess rendition that ought to do the job for anybody who likes to play this marvellous strategical board game.
One of the three built-in games included with certain premium versions of the Windows Vista operating system (the other games being InkBall and Mahjong Titans), Chess Titans is a simple chess game with support for both local multiplayer and AI opponents (with 10 difficulty levels). It also supports the Windows Media Center service for use with TVs.
I solved the null pointer problem this way:
find the real Microsoft games ( it located in program files on C in windows 7) copy it or download the pack from net.
then rename it as Microsoft games2
past it in program files windows 10 ( it will not work if you click on any icon)
reinstall the windows 7 games foe windows 10
and play.

BUT ANYWAY THANKS A MILLION
Oh thank goodness!!! My enjoyment of solitaire and chess on the new lappy had dropped to nil because of all the web based crapola involved. Now I can just play and relax. Whew!
You kindness in sharing this alternative is greatly appreciated, many blessings to you, in whatever form you wish for them Sergei
I am running windows 10 pro insider preview evaluation copy 14257.rs1 release.160131-1800 and the games do not run, MS are blocking them somehow, they channel you to their basic games then they want cash to upgrade pretty poor show in my opinion, no wonder the Pirates make a bundle.
Regarding the windows 7 games on win 10
After upgrading to win 10 ver 1607, the games has stopped working. I have tried to make it run as win 7 , as making win 10 use the 7 adjustments. but nothing seems to work. no reaction at all from the program when one double click it
regards

I use win 8.1 and chess titans in the updated version 2 for windows 7, 8 and 10. But Chess Titans in level 10 freezes the PC after about 30 moves, only shut down is possible. (Level 1 is playing until the end = mate).
I was never able to trap that null pointer error in windows 10. I am looking at that as it might be possible to have the correct (older) dll that does not cause the problem installed and used but I am no expert on windows internals..
As of this latest Windows update, I did NOT find CardGames.dll on Windows 10. However, I DID find CardGames.dll on an old Windows 7 hard drive. Date modified is 7/13/2009. I copied CardGames.dll to C:\windows\system32 and now Solitaire and Free Cell work. Thanks!

Chess Titans is a premium 3D chess game developed by Oberon Media for Microsoft. It was introduced in Windows Vista as one of the new premium games alongside Purble Place and Mahjong Titans and is also bundled with Windows 7. The goal of the game is to displace all of the opponent's chess pieces in order to win. It can be played with 2 players or against the computer.
It features extensive photorealistic graphics for the game board and chess pieces which can be rotated in 3D. It was designed in tandem with the design principles of the Windows Aero theme and to showcase the 3D capabilities of Windows Vista.
The game is fully animated and especially developed for Windows Aero with its glass-like view and in-game 3D-rotation. Chess Titans uses the advanced graphical user interface (GUI) of recent versions of Windows. Players can change the color scheme by pressing F7 and change the chess pieces and chess board:
Chess Titans is a chess game based on standard rules, including an 8x8 playing board and sixteen pieces given to each of two players. The game can be played using either a mouse or Xbox 360 controller for Windows.
Players can play against the computer after selecting the computer skill in a scale from 1 to 10. After a move is made by the computer, the player can view the last move. When clicking on a chess piece, Chess Titans shows all possibilities for that move, which helps the player in playing Chess. This option can also be turned off.
