There is a tale from the Middle Ages about a magic pebble, called thetouchstone, that when rubbed against any metal, would turn the metal into gold. It was said that this pebble could be found on the shores of the Black Sea. It looked like any other pebble on the beach. The only difference between the touchstone and the other pebbles was that it was warm to the touch, and all the others felt cold.

Very early on, in headship, I developed a series of three touchstones that proved useful when faced with complex decisions. Was the decision I was taking legal and moral? Would it keep the wolves away from the door (read Ofsted)? And would it, when implemented, be good enough for my children?

Discharged teachers have alleged violations of the 14th amendment of the U.S. Constitution in both its equal protection and due process aspects and violations of the Kentucky constitution. However, in each instance the courts have summarily dismissed these claims, preferring instead to confirm the legislative tenure scheme as a judicial touchstone and a teacher's sole shield.

During read aloud, today, we're reading what I call a touchstone text. It's usually a picture book that may or may not be at grade level, but that really demonstrates a particular idea or skill or strategy well.

Last month (June, 2020), the Center for Community and Citizen Science issued a statement committing to take action against racism in the work that we do. As promised in that statement, we have been working on more specific commitments, listed below, which will guide us in the months and years ahead. We intend for this touchstone document to evolve as we learn and grow, and hope that it may be useful to our community of collaborators and beyond. The next step in our process is to identify specific actions, tools, frameworks, etc., linked to these commitment statements.

Like previous editions, the third edition of Reconceptualizing the Literacies in Adolescents' Lives invites middle- and high-school educators to move toward a broad, generative view of adolescent literacies. Recognizing that digital media, social networking phenomena are now central in adolescents' lives, what is different is the focus in this edition on bridging students' everyday literacies and subject matter learning. Four chapters from earlier editions serve as touchstone texts, honoring youth's diverse experiences and illustrating how young people's literacies are enacted, situated, and mediated in various locales; nine new chapters consider how these themes are lived in today's schools and in the rapidly changing world outside of school. This edition features heightened attention multimodal meaning construction, more discussion of practical implications of the ideas presented, and co-authored teacher commentaries at the end of each section. A Companion Website, new for this edition, facilitates practical application of the text's key ideas, with discussion questions, and links to instructional activities, blogs, additional readings and viewings, and interactive web pages, and videos.

Chapter 1, "The Philosopher's Stone: Writing and the Humanities," by Stephen Tchudi, alchemically blends a philosophical, theoretical view of writing with its practical application. Through the touchstone of writing, base learning is turned to gold.
