Subject: [si-chapter-kk] Winter Storm Uri - Note on Sewa International's work in Houston
Houston, TX (February 23, 2021): Sewa International distributed over 43,000 pounds of food and hundreds of gallons of drinking water on Saturday, February 20 to families affected by the winter storm in Houston.
Sewa partnered with many local organizations to conduct the food drive. Cars had lined up two to three miles before the drive started at 9 AM indicating the dire need for food and water in the area arising out of the deadly storm and the pandemic.
Sewa volunteers swung into action immediately after they started receiving calls about burst pipes, water leakage, and flooding of homes. They took a plumber with them and fixed problems and leaks in about 13 homes over the weekend. The volunteer team structure Sewa had put in place for the pandemic came in handy. Sewa shared a list of more than 500 plumbers serving different areas of Houston with the community.
A young couple with an eight-month pregnant wife and an elderly couple did not have drinking water and electricity, and Sewa volunteers helped them after receiving calls about their situation. On their request, the elderly couple was provided a host family to ride out the storm. An elderly woman living alone was one of the many that Sewa helped with either accommodation or food and water.
In another instance, Sewa arranged for oxygen canisters for a 90-year-old man when his wife called for help. For a few families, volunteers supplied dehumidifiers and fans and for many others, they provided food, water, and other essentials. The volunteers are continuing to serve Houston and other Texas communities to help people face the difficulties caused by the storm. “This ‘Polar Vortex’ has shown us that natural disasters and crises can strike at any moment, and we need to be ready to serve the distressed and the underserved in our communities, even as we struggle to ensure our individual and family safety. We will continue to monitor the needs of our communities and are ready with aid and support.
