I say no.
Portland has conflicting noise ordinances that disproportionately impact venues owned and patronized by our black and brown neighbors. We currently allow brand new condos to be built right next to historic venues, with no sound mitigation or even required notification to would-be residents. When that happens, noise and other complaints start from the new tenants that threaten the livelihood of Portland's existing venues and working musicians.
I stand with musicians and local venue owners and that's far from the only aspect of how our city council should be working to support Portland's vibrant music scene. A
report was released this year showing that
music has a $3.8 BILLION dollar economic impact in Oregon. It is imperative our city's leadership step up to be a better partner, yet we are failing at the most basic levels.
I'd like to invite you to a forum to discuss this policy area. The event will be moderated by musician and former Mayoral Candidate
Bim Ditson. I'll be joined by the host of my favorite new podcast,
Stumptown Soundcheck, and city council candidate for District 1, (East Portland),
Jamie Dunphy.
