Hi Team,

I'm thinking of proposing an AOSP (Android Open Source Project) BoF at
upcoming DevConf (4-5 Aug, Bangalore https://devconf.info/in/) under
OS/Platform track, if enough people are interested in participating.

Just like any other BoF, there will be no fixed agenda. People,
however, are encouraged to come with slides/questions/topics of their
interest around AOSP.

Primary goal of this BoF is to kickstart a meetup of fellow developers
building AOSP devices, be it smart
STBs/Kiosks/Wearables/Gateways/Auto/Multimedia infotainment devices or
custom ROMs or may be just a generic embedded device with a headless
AOSP or running AOSP in containers (e.g. Anbox) or a proof of concept
device to test the waters et al. A meetup group wherein AOSP
developers exchange ideas, learn from each other's past experiences
and hopefully collaborate on common solutions.

Common pain points for discussion, off the top of my head, are Updates
(how to Treble-ize? A/B updates anyone?), Android vendor BSPs (are
you still stuck on stone age vendor kernels?), development devices
(development devices popular among developers? pros-n-cons?), TEE
(Trusted Execution Environ) integration, Testing etc.

We can start with few slides (on how to start with upstream AOSP
development and/or other proposed topics) to warm up the room and take
the discussion forward from there. Any custom ROM developers in the
forum? Would love to hear from you.

I'll propose a session if I get good response from developers. Let me
know if you would want to be a part of this AOSP BoF. Also please
forward it to the other people/groups, who might be interested in
this.

Regards,
Amit Pundir

PS: Sorry for cross posting it across multiple mailing lists. And
spamming custom ROM developers in the CC :)

I might be able to talk about plans for Qualcomm AOSP builds depending
of what we get released by then.

It would also be useful to add the bits that you and John do about the
delta of the AOSP kernel from mainline and plans for it.

Sounds interesting to me. Let me know if this plan goes ahead.

Would love to be a part of it.

Great. I am sure this will be of interest to the delegates.

Btw, are you planning to register a separate session or be part of
the 3 hour slot which Vaishali was planning on reserving?

I unfortunately will be traveling on those dates, let me know If I could
be of any help remotely :).

Wouldn't miss it for the world. The lack of AOSP exposure at Google Developer Days was disheartening :(

I would love it if we can have Android kernel related topics in the kernel
BoF.

I have applied for 3 hours of kernel BoF slot at the moment. And I'm sure
we can give around 1.5 hours to AOSP project. If there is more time
required, I can figure out something with organizers as well.

Of course, absolutely fine if you want separate BoF for AOSP. Nonetheless,
I'm interested in attending it anyway.

That's a good idea Vaishali. I believe most AOSP developers will be
interested in kernel BoF as well, so I don't see any reason why not
share the same slot. I have got a feeling that we may need more than 3
hours though. I have got really good response so far. So lets wait
for a day or two, for more people/ideas to chip in and then plan the
BoF layout.

During the free time could we topics such as:

- how devs are enabling treble support for devices which didn't come with stock oreo?

- porting roms?

- trebelizing your device?

The AOSP BoF would be all of the Android ecosystem, not just the kernel,
which is why it probably deserves a separate BoF, especially with Treble
and related developments.

Yeah, when I mailed , there wasn't many suggestions apart from android
kernel related topics, but now I see that some people have shown an
interest in other areas of AOSP project as well. So, sure a separate BoF

Hi Team,

Based on the really good response I have got so far, I'm going to
propose a BoF room for 20+ participants for Saturday 4th Aug. For the
time slot, I want to limit it to 3 hours if people agree to it. ? We
can try to extend it or continue next day if we get good response and
of course if organisers agree to it :)

Following is the list of tentative AOSP topics which are of general
interest. Please add a new topic in the list if I missed out any.
Since I know few people in this email list who have already worked on
those topics, and might be able to help answer general queries, so I
took the liberty of adding their names against that topic. Feel free
to ignore it, if I tagged you wrong. Also please feel free to add your
name against a topic, if you like to help lead discussion around that
topic.

Of course. You can have as much time as you want :)
I'm waiting for few more people to confirm and then plan the BoF
layout. I'll request for a projector/screen, so if people want to
present something that would be great. And there will be few slides
for sure, to start with, but on the other hand I don't want to force
someone to come up with slides and give a talk on topic for 30+
minutes. I'm more inclined towards having a fish bowl like setup for
this BoF for discussions and Q&A. Similar to that "Git" Q&A we did
once in our kernel meetup. That was more fun and interactive right?

But again it is just me and nothing is planned yet. I'll go with
whatever majority of the attendees think make sense.

I figured i'll be back in town for the conf. Could I volunteer
to speak on Android Automotive. ~15-20 mins would do.
Unless someone has already picked the topic.
