Title: So what's brewing lately in Kernel for data placement

Theme: IO (Storage)

Abstract:
Managing data placement on flash-based storage can bring a multitude of values, such as improved performance, reduced wear, and more usable space. Data-placement technologies have evolved fast in storage. On the kernel side, too, there has been active development to keep up. This development is growing with the advent of the most recent data-placement technology, Flexible Data Placement (FDP).
This talk presents the up-to-date state of the data-placement mechanisms in the upstream kernel. It clarifies the interfaces that a Linux application has at its disposal. It concludes with an open discussion on how filesystems should leverage write-hints.

Outline:
- Why flash storage users care about data-placement
- Outline the evolution of data-placement technologies
- FDP in a nutshell
- How does the revamped passthrough interface [1] help to do data placement
- The return of write-hint infrastructure [2] with 6.9 kernel
- FDP + write-hint: what does it mean? [3]
- Open discussion: should filesystems be more autonomous with write-hints; cover F2FS, XFS, Ext4 and Btrfs.
