Hi Team,
Please find my talk proposal for Bangalore Linux kernel meetup 6th Dec 2025
Beyond the Kernel: How Linux Filesystems Stack Up Against Specialized Storage Innovation in the field.
Abstract -
Linux kernel filesystems, encompassing robust choices like XFS, Ext4, and Btrfs, form the foundation for a vast array of enterprise and cloud storage needs. These native offerings continuously adapt to new hardware and workload demands, delivering reliability and versatility. However, the storage industry is experiencing significant disruption from specialized startups and vendors, who are pushing the boundaries of performance, data integrity, and economics with novel, often non-kernel, architectural approaches.
Key data points to be elaborated will be as below
1) The Strengths of In-Kernel Filesystems
2) The Rise of Specialized/Non-Kernel File Systems
3) Examples of Specialized Solutions ( Container native, Flash native)
4) Emerging Demands and how the Kernel is Addressing the same.
5) Kernel adaptation to evolving Filesystem Landscape
