Reviewed from digital galleys R 4-7 yrs Art's dad still isn't over his cold, so the father-and-son duo set out to get the ingredients for some "sick-fighting juice," first taking the train to the city's farmer's market. They're specifically on the hunt for ginger, but the medicinal root remains elusive as they visit the market's various booths. Still, they do collect other vitamin-packed foods, including carrots, collards, apples, oranges, and even cayenne pepper, the combination of which could still be "cold-clobbering" even without the ginger. The problem is, they don't have a juicer, and worse, they don't have a way home after the train station closes. Fortunately, Art's stepfather Dhillon passes by and takes them home; he also happens to have some ginger root and an ingenious way to juice the fruits and veggies. An ode to city life and community, this jaunt through public transit, urban farmer's markets, and corner shops highlights the interconnectedness both of Art's neighborhoods and the people in his life, as he sees friendly faces along his journey and eventually comes home to a full house of neighbors and family ready to help Art and his dad. Thin linework and watercolorlike dapples and swirls complement the text's gentle tone, though the adult figures are sometimes stiffly posed. Dad's closing comment on community members keeping each other safe is somewhat undercut by the fact that he was sick while they saw a wide assortment of people, but the walk through the city still gives this page-turning appeal. A recipe for the cold-clobbering juice is included. A Spanish edition will also be published.
